Wishing Well
INXS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you ever want to taste it
Go down to the wishing well
Poison in the well won't make it
Keep yourself as strong as can be

All men I'll take you
Take you down and tell you why
I said woman gonna take you
Take you down a well that's wide

Take it to the river
Take it to the world
I say loving heart
Gonna show the way

All men
What ya seeing
Living it all for the life
Say all men
What ya seeing
Gonna change your ways
Gonna change your ways
Gonna change your mind

If you're ever gonna taste it
Never look right or left
Look ahead
I'm the healer
You're believing

Gonna carry ya to the end
Gonna carry ya to the end

I'm a healer
I'm a healer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to INXS’s “Wishing Well” speak of a warning about the dangers of taking in toxic messages and influences from those around us. The song compares the metaphorical wishing well to a person who we may encounter in our lives, someone who may promise us great things but ultimately leave us worse off than before. The first verse warns that if we want to truly experience the “taste” of life, we should avoid the tainted well, and instead “keep [ourselves] as strong as can be”.

The second verse is more ominous, as the singer warns that these dangerous people will “take you down and tell you why”. The use of “all men” and “woman” in this verse suggest that this is a warning for anyone who might be willing to fall under the sway of such toxic influences, regardless of gender. The chorus urges the listener to take control of their own destiny, “take it to the river, take it to the world”, and to let love be their guide.

The verses that follow again emphasize that it is up to the listener to make choices and take control of their future: “If you’re ever gonna taste it, never look right or left, look ahead”. The final repetition of the phrase “I’m a healer” suggests that the singer is urging the listener to trust themselves, to recognize that they have the power to heal and move forward, and to avoid those who would try to bring them down.
