Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
I Am Sam [Original Soundtrack] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds

Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds

Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Sky, sky, sky

Overall Meaning

The song "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" by The Beatles is a psychedelic masterpiece that is meant to take the listener on a trippy journey full of vivid imagery and strange characters. The song is believed to be inspired by LSD and its effects on the mind, but it's also been said that the song's title comes from a drawing that John Lennon's son Julian made of a school friend named Lucy. The lyrics describe a surreal world where everything is colorful and strange. The first verse paints a picture of a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies, and a girl with kaleidoscope eyes who disappears as soon as she appears. The second verse takes the listener on a journey to a bridge by a fountain where everything is even more bizarre, with rocking horse people eating marshmallow pies and towering flowers. The final verse puts the listener on a train where plasticine porters with looking glass ties are waiting, and once again, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes appears.

The song may seem nonsensical, but it's full of symbolism and hidden meanings. Many interpret the song as a journey through the mind on an LSD trip. The tangerine trees and marmalade skies may represent the colors that are often enhanced while hallucinating, while the girl with the kaleidoscope eyes might represent the way that one's vision can become distorted while under the influence of the drug. Some have speculated that the "Lucy" in the title stands for "Lucifer," and that the song is really about a journey through hell, complete with fiery skies and demonic creatures. Others have suggested that the song is about Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, with the lyrics describing the journey that Alice takes down the rabbit hole. Whatever its true meaning, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is a trippy, otherworldly song that has captured the imaginations of listeners for decades.
