Allegedly nicknamed "King Monkey" by Dodgy's drummer Mathew Priest. Brown is well known to standout from the crowd and had his own unique style, whilst in The Roses he used to often wear big baggy flares and his landmark t-shirt with banknotes on. He now has a more casual look: Adidas Jackets, tracksuit bottoms, army trousers and a pair of shades. He is also recognisable for his varying hairstyles including: Blonde mohawk (early Stone Roses days) short (also early Stone roses days) undercut (similar to John Squire's) Big Hair (1989) bob cut (early 90's) Skinhead and his most well known hairdo long and shaggy with a fringe.
He has had two top 5 singles in the UK, My Star and Dolphins Were Monkeys. In 2005 he collaborated with Noel Gallagher from Oasis for the track Keep What Ya Got. He has also collaborated with U.N.K.L.E. on two tracks, 1999's Be There and Reign in 2004.
Recently Brown has started playing Stone Roses songs during gigs, fuelling speculation that a reunion may be on the cards. But In September 2005 Ian appeared to rule out a Stone Roses reunion saying "there's more chance of me reforming the Happy Mondays than the Roses". Happy Mondays in fact have reformed, but yet Brown appears pessimistic about a likelihood of any reunion. A reunion would also hinge on the co-operation of Roses guitarist John Squire who recently stated his desire to turn his back on music and focus on painting.
His latest album, My Way, was released September 2009.
Whispers
Ian Brown Lyrics

Spent the night trying to bond with the moon
She never loved you
Just a whole wild, two scene, chopped up, splitscreen, dream machine
An alibi for lonesome dreams
I hear a lot of rumours
I hear a lot of stone cold rumours
I hear a lot of easy talking, given whispers
About you
She only wanted you
For what you could do to get her picture in a sunday magazine
She`s just a whole wild, two scene, choppped up, splitscreen, dream machine
An alibi for lonesome dreams
I hear a lot of rumours
I hear a lot of stone cold rumours
I hear a lot of whispers
I hear a lot of easy talking, given whispers
About you
I hear a lot of rumours
I hear a lot of stone cold rumours
I hear a lot of whispers
I hear a lot of easy talking, given whispers
What a pleasure it is to receive
And what a God given gift it is to the air that we breathe
I hear a lot of rumours
I hear a lot of stone cold rumours
I hear a lot of whispers
I hear a lot of easy talking, given whispers
About you
I hear a lot of rumours
I hear a lot of whispers
And they`re all about you
The lyrics of Ian Brown's song Whispers seem to be addressing someone who has woken up after trying and failing to bond with nature, specifically the moon. The person seems to have been seeking solace in nature, perhaps trying to escape from something, but it wasn't received as expected. The moon represents an unrequited love that is difficult to catch, and the split-screen dream machine is a metaphor for a situation that is illusory and ultimately futile.
The second stanza is an explanation of why this person failed to find solace. The person was being used by another party who had no interest in them beyond their usefulness in getting into a magazine. This "whole wild, two scenes, split-screen, dream machine" is the same illusory situation from the first stanza. The person was merely an alibi for someone else's lonesome dreams.
The chorus of the song expresses the rumors that circulate about this person. The gossip is described as "whispers" and "easy talking." Although we don't know what is said about the person, it seems that it isn't pleasant. The last verse seems to indicate a sense of gratitude for simple pleasures like air to breathe, but the chorus repeats the imagery of the first chorus, leaving the sense that rumors and whispers will continue to swirl around this person.
Overall, the song Whispers seems to be about the difficulty of finding connection and genuine solace in a world where people are easily fooled and exploitative. The lyrics use a combination of natural and technological imagery to create a sense of a world where nothing is quite what it seems.
