Born on 12th May 1942, he is best known as founder and lead singer of the British band Ian Dury and the Blockheads, though he began his musical career in pub-rock act Kilburn & the High Roads. He wrote many famous songs including "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick", "What a Waste", and "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll". He died on 27th March 2000.
At the age of seven, Dury contracted polio; very likely, he believed, from a swimming pool at Southend on Sea during the 1949 polio epidemic. After six weeks in a full plaster cast in Truro hospital, he was moved to Black Notley Hospital, Braintree, Essex, where he spent a year and a half before going to Chailey Heritage Craft School, East Sussex, in 1951. Chailey was a school and hospital for disabled children, and believed in toughening them up, contributing to the observant and determined person Dury became.
I’m Partial To Your Abracadabra

I'm raptured by the joy of it all
So stop me where you start
The cockles of his heart
The panties sends it right up the wall
Please, please, stop it, it likes it
Tickles it to death either way
To drive it round the twist
The call of nature must be obeyed
Glad it's over, but this is worse
Could hardly say it had been coerced
Stop it cos it likes it, it's worse
I'm partial to your abracadabra
The unforeseen erogenous zones
Stop, it insists
Slap it with your wrists
It likes it when you leave it alone
There's been a manifestation
Nature made it answer the call
It simply can't resist
Boots and pants like this
Abracadabra for all
Glad that's over, but this is worse
Roll it over, too perverse
Stop it cos it likes it, it's worse
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm partial to your abracadabra
The lyrics to Ian Dury's song "I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra" are both playful and provocative, using language that is both suggestive and humorous. At its core, the song is about sexual desire and the various ways in which it can manifest itself. The singer is "partial" to his partner's "abracadabra," a term which is never fully defined but which seems to refer to her sexual appeal, her mysterious allure, and perhaps even her magical powers.
The lyrics are full of double entendres and poetic turns of phrase. The line "Stop me where you start the cockles of his heart" is one example, using the idiom "to warm the cockles of your heart" to describe the singer's physical arousal. The line "The call of nature must be obeyed" similarly plays on the idea of natural urges, casting them as forces that are beyond our control.
Despite the explicit nature of the lyrics, the song is not solely about sex. There is an underlying sense of playfulness and lightheartedness that prevents it from feeling crass. The repetition of the phrase "stop it cos it likes it" suggests that the singer is both aware of and complicit in his own desires, enjoying the pleasure even as he mocks his own weakness.
Overall, "I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra" is a clever and entertaining song that strikes a balance between humor and sensuality.
