Ferrer was born at a dance in San Luis, near the city of Santiago de Cuba. His mother died when he was 12, leaving him orphaned and forcing him to sing on the streets (busk) to earn money. The next year, Ferrer joined his first ever musical group, a duet alongside his cousin called Jovenes del Son (Spanish: Youths of Son). They performed at private functions and the two youths managed to scrape together enough money to live.
Over the next few years, Ferrer would perform with many musical groups, including Conjunto Sorpresa and Orquesta Chepin-Choven.
The leader of the latter composed one of Ferrer's biggest hits, "El Platanal de Bartolo".

Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there
And he just kept on singing, singing clear and strong
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
He was strumming my pain, yeah, he was singing my life
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

Son tantas las cosas
Que dice
canta mi historia esa voz
suave me mata su ritmo
esos acordes
yo he visto toda mi vida
pasando por sus palabras
su emoción!
oi que alguien cantaba
una buena canción
era una muchacha dulce
un ángel dije yo
que estilo aquel que suerte
tuve de conocerle!
toca mi piel cuando dice
ondas palabras de amor
suave me mata su ritmo
y al encontrarle
ya nada pareció extraño
me hizo sentir de nuevo la pasión!
pedazos de mi vida
narrava su canción
de donde me conoce?
que extraño pense yo!
cantaba mi esperanza y un poco mi dolor
suave me mata ese canto
sostiene mi vida esa voz
suave me mata este ritmo
esa mirada
su risa cambia mi vida
cantando con toda el alma
su canción!
atras quedan temores
toda la soledad
un nuevo sol alumbra
entera la ciudad
la conocí cantando
con su canción me encantó
una emocion increíble
canta mi vida esa voz
canción ke me esta matando
y me despierta
su ritmo
tan dulces sueños
dormidos nuevos caminos
de mi amor!
killing me softly!!!
toca mi piel cuando dice
ondas palabras de amor
suave me mata su ritmo
y al encontrarte
ya nada pareció extraño
me hizo sentir de nuevo la pasión!
