They were formed in 1984 under the name the Rose, then Purgatory, by guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer and original drummer Greg Seymour. Iced Earth released their debut album in 1990 and have since released twelve studio albums, four EPs, three compilations, three box sets, three live albums and eleven music videos.
After releasing the demo EP Enter the Realm (1989) and signing to Century Media Records, the band released two full-length studio albums – Iced Earth (1990) and Night of the Stormrider (1991) – before taking a two-year hiatus from 1992 to 1994, after which the band returned with new lead vocalist Matt Barlow. Iced Earth went on to release four studio albums with him in over half a decade: Burnt Offerings (1995), The Dark Saga (1996), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998) and Horror Show (2001).
After Horror Show, Barlow quit the band and joined the police force, while Iced Earth continued on with Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Judas Priest, on vocals. With Owens, the band released two studio albums (2004's The Glorious Burden and 2007's Framing Armageddon: Something Wicked Part 1). In late 2007, Barlow rejoined the band, and they recorded one more album with him: The Crucible of Man: Something Wicked Part 2 (2008). In 2011, Barlow once again left Iced Earth, and was replaced by Into Eternity frontman Stu Block. Dystopia, Block's first album with the group, was released that October; the album received a positive response, while some critics called it one of Iced Earth's best albums. The group recorded two more albums with Block: Plagues of Babylon (2014) and Incorruptible (2017).
Before arriving at their current lineup, Iced Earth has had numerous line-up changes, with founder Jon Schaffer as the only founding member remaining. As of 2021, there have been over thirty musicians in and out of Iced Earth since its formation in 1984.
The band is composed solely of Schaffer and drummer Brent Smedley, with all other band members having departed following Schaffer's January 2021 arrest by the FBI for his involvement in the Capitol riots. Schaffer is in FBI custody on felony charges, which has generated new publicity for Iced Earth and has resulted in the band being dropped from their longtime label Century Media.

As a an Iced Earth fan, and having found out that band founder and creator Jon Schaffer is now supposedly a "person of interest" with regards to the events that occurred at the Capital this past week, I will say this;
I am a Christian first and foremost above ANY nationality, ethical or political labels. My faith in Jesus Christ makes me who I am, and what I stand for and believe!!!
That being said, I don't promote (or tolerate) ANY violence or bullying in any way, shape or form. Having been a victim of bullying through grade school and from an abusive ex-step dad, I have strong feelings on the subject and first hand experience in those types of toxic and hateful environments.
However, with the actions of Mr. Schaffer, having the fondest respect for him as a musician, artists and songwriter, let me just share this nugget with you.
Whether you agree with his actions or not, at least he STANDS behind what he sings about!!! He doesn't just sing about freedom, liberty and the Constitution and then sit back and cash checks for being a fraud and hypocrite, like bands like Rage Against the Machine whom sing about third world oppression (then mainly blame America) and then don't do a damn thing about it and just sit their happy asses in their million dollar mansions collecting royalty checks.
Shaffer's actions are, and we're the basis for which he believes and sings about--be it legal or not.
And news flash people, the so called "breech" that Schaffer was part of that's considered a crime PALES in comparison the number of crimes against humanity done INSIDE that damn building EVERYDAY!!!!!
Schaffer didn't hurt anyone, kill anyone or provoke violence in anyway. He is just part of the frustrations that us Patriots have been facing everyday since this rigged and robbed election that Trump DID WIN in a landslide before the TRUE CRIME was committed in the dead of night on election night.
I'd rather see Schaffer stand up for and fight for what he believes in, and let the chips fall where they may, than be a hypocrite behind his lyrics.
True Patriots deal with consequences if they believe enough in their actions that the intent of their actions is righteous anger.
Even Jesus displayed righteous anger when He turned over the merchant tables in the temple Court yard and declared, "My Father's house will be a house of prayer, not a den of merchants!" And Jesus didn't kill anyone doing that, nor did Schaffer intend to harm anyone with his display of righteous anger.
Very seldom do Americans get to demonstrate their displeasure with our government and/or government officials, to the point where their voices can be heard. This election for Trump supporters like myself, and I'm sure Mr. Schaffer took us to the brink where we've just HAD ENOUGH of the BS!
I don't condone violence at all, but I do condone making your voice heard when it seems NOBODY is listening or caring!
This is America and if we can't have our vices heard then eventually we will MAKE our voices heard. I feel that's all Schaffer was doing at the Caption bc Washington sure as hell hasn't been listening for DECADES and Trump was (and still is) our mouth piece for Patriotism, freedom and liberty! That's partially why the left and establishment HATE HIM!
Schaffer isn't a stupid man and I'm sure he felt what he was doing was "righteous anger" and like the thousands of Trump supporters there, he wasn't going to Washington to hurt anyone, he was there to MAKE his voice heard!
But as we all know, the fake news will spin any of what happened at the capital as any negative light on Trump!
I support Schaffer actions under the banner of righteous anger. The sad part is that most of the Congress pictures should be on the FBI most wanted list too for the BS and treason they've done to our country!

In my Head-canon Iced Earth broke up after Burnt Offerings, but gave us three of the greatest thrash albums of all time (aside from Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss).

No politicians were hurt in the making of this record! 😀
