Melancholy
Iced Earth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Make the sadness go away
Come back another day
For years I've tried to teach
But their eyes are empty
Empty too I have become
For them I must die
A sad and troubled race
An ungrateful troubled place

I see the sadness in their eyes
Melancholy in their cries
Devoid of all the passion
The human spirit cannot die
Look at the pain around me
This is what I cry for
Look at the pain around me
This is what I'll die for

Make the sadness go away
Come back another day
The things I've said and done
Don't matter to anyone
But still, you push me to see
Something, I can never be
Why am I their shattered king?
I don't mean anything

I see the sadness in their eyes
Melancholy in their cries
Devoid of all the passion
The human spirit cannot die
Look at the pain around me
This is what I cry for
Look at the pain around me
This is what I'll die for

I see the sadness in their eyes
Melancholy in their cries
Devoid of all the passion
The human spirit cannot die
Look at the pain around me
This is what I cry for
Look at the pain around me
This is what I'll die for

I see the sadness in their eyes (make the sadness go away)
Melancholy in their cries
Devoid of all the passion
The human spirit cannot die
Look at the pain around me
This is what I cry for

Look at the pain around me
This is what I'll die for

Overall Meaning

The song "Melancholy" by Iced Earth is a reflection on the sadness and disillusionment that the artist sees in society. The lyrics articulate a struggle to understand and connect with a world that seems to have lost its humanity. The artist cries out for the sadness to go away, but acknowledges that it may be a perpetual condition of the human condition. The artist feels compelled to try to make sense of the pain and suffering they see around them, and perhaps to even sacrifice themselves for it. They question their own role in this world, and express a sense of loneliness and isolation despite their attempts to make a difference.

The repetition of the phrase "make the sadness go away" reinforces the sense of desperation that runs throughout the song. The artist seems to be imploring some higher power to take away the pain, but also acknowledges that this may be impossible. The line "a sad and troubled race, an ungrateful troubled place" encapsulates the artist's view of humanity as fundamentally flawed but also potentially redeemable. The chorus, with its powerful vocals and driving rhythm, underscores the urgency and intensity of the artist's message.

But their eyes are empty
Empty, too, I have become

In the metal world if you mention Iced Earth everyone goes, oh shit yeah they kick ass, but it's as if they forgot about them and you reminded them how awesome they were. They're one of those bands that everyone likes and respects, but never gained the popularity of an Iron Maiden or a Metallica. Truth be told, Iced Earth is one of the  greatest metal bands of all time. they are real, authentic, classic metal and deserve to be mentioned amongst the gods of metal.

@nektorhond

@KittycatKye

I agree! Just because the artist goes out and does something horrible, that doesn't automatically mean the music is horrible.
