Electric Blue
Icehouse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If a boy had a chance
A chance with someone like you
Are you gonna break his heart?
Let him cry for the moon?
Are you hiding somewhere behind those eyes?

I just freeze (I just freeze)
Every time you see through me (see through)
And it's all over you
Electric blue
On my knees (on my knees)
Help me, baby (help me)
Tell me, what can I do?
Electric blue

Oh, I had a dream
For a moment I believed it was true
Oh, I'd have given anything
Just to be there with you
Are you hiding
Somewhere behind those eyes?

I just freeze (I just freeze)
Every time you see through me (see through)
And it's all over you
Electric blue
In too deep (in too deep)
Standing here waiting
As I'm breaking into (ooh)
Electric blue
I can see (I can see)
Can see that it may be just a vision for you
Electric blue
On my knees (on my knees)
Help me, baby (help me)
Tell me what can I do?
Electric blue

Help me baby

Yeah, yeah

Are you hiding somewhere behind those eyes? (behind those eyes)

I just freeze every time you see through me (see through)
And it's all over you
Electric blue
In too deep (in too deep)
Standing here waiting as I'm breaking in two (in two)
Electric blue
I can see (I can see)
Can see that it may be just a vision of you (of you)
Electric blue
On my knees (on my knees) (what can)
Help me baby tell me what can I do? (I do)

Electric blue (behind those eyes)

I just freeze every time you see through me
And it's all over you
Electric blue
In too deep (in too deep) (I'm)
Standing here waiting as I'm breaking in two (in two)
Electric blue
I can see (I can see)
Can see that it may be just a vision of you
Electric blue
On my knees (on my knees) (what can)
Help me baby tell me what can I do? (I do)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Icehouse's song "Electric Blue" tell the story of a man who is hopelessly in love with a woman who may not reciprocate his feelings. He asks if she will break his heart or let him yearn for her from afar, all while feeling insecure and vulnerable around her. He describes being frozen in her presence, unable to express his feelings, and feeling like his dream of being with her is too good to be true.

The repeated phrase "Electric blue" suggests that the woman he loves possesses a certain inexplicable magic or power that he finds both alluring and intimidating. The chorus describes him being on his knees and asking her for help, indicating his desperation for her attention and affection. The song is ultimately a tale of unrequited love, with the singer left yearning for a woman who may never reciprocate his feelings.

@CasaDeChihuahuas

I was 12 when this song came out and I remember sitting up all night trying to catch it on the radio to "tape" it on an old cassette. Then i took it with me on a roadtrip with my family to the beach. I remember rewinding it over and over. 34 years later and the song still stings me with intense nostalgia and brings me right back there. Love and peace to any fellow 80s kids who still return to these songs for comfort. โค
