You better get ready and hold on tight
There's trouble ahead, we're in for a fight
It's one on one and one for all
United we stand, divided we fall
The bloodiest sight that you ever saw
All together, the poor and rich
Up in smoke with the flick of the switch
When I look into the sky
The fire's burning in the night
I know it's not my time to die
I won't give in, without a fight
We're in a world war
Fighting for our lives
It's a world war in 1994
So grab your guns and shoot to kill
Death and destruction right on your heels
The time has come to bury your nation
Say your Prayers, it's your salvation
When I look into the sky
The fire's burning in the night
I know it's not my time to die
I won't give in, without a fight
We're in a world war
Fighting for our lives
It's a world war in 1994
No, no I'll never let go
They'll never take me
You'll never take me alive
When I look up to the sky
The fire's burning in the night
We're in a world war
It's not my time to die
It's a WORLD WAR in 1994
We're in a world war
Fighting for our lives
It's a world war in 1994
World war, it's not our time to die
We're in a world war in 1994
We're in a world war
Fighting for our lives
It's a world war in 1994
The song "World War" by Icon seems to depict a chaotic, apocalyptic scenario of a world war that takes place in 1994. The opening lines command the listener to prepare themselves and hold on tight because trouble is ahead, and the world is in for a fight. The lyrics emphasize unity as the key to survival- "one on one and one for all, united we stand, divided we will fall." The song talks about imposing martial law, and the poor and the rich going up in smoke with the flick of a switch. The imagery in the song is vivid, with the bloodiest sight ever being seen and all hopes for safety going up in smoke. Despite the situation, the singer does not want to give up and will continue to fight, no matter what.
Although the song's meaning is obscure, it can be seen as calling out for unity and making sacrifices in times of a crisis. The lyrics are powerful and describe the strength and perseverance needed to survive a world-changing event. It's also noteworthy that the song's title has the same name as two other historical events that took place years before the song's release; World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945), which could indicate that the song is a metpahor for any significant war, including those that occured earlier in the 20th century.
