Let It Go
Idina Menzel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day

Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Overall Meaning

One of the most popular and beloved Disney songs of all time is Idina Menzel's "Let It Go." In the song, Menzel sings about freeing oneself from expectations and constraints, letting go of the past and embracing one's true self. The lyrics set the scene on a snowy mountain, where the singer finds herself alone and isolated, with no one around to judge her. She reveals her innermost thoughts and feelings, expressing the need to break free and be her own person, unburdened by the pressure to conform to societal norms. The song not only resonated with young listeners, but also adults who could relate to its message of empowerment and self-discovery.

The first verse of the song establishes the setting of a desolate, wintry landscape. The singer describes herself as the queen of this kingdom of isolation, where she is free to be herself. She acknowledges the storm within her, as though she might be afraid to show the world who she truly is. She's tried to suppress what makes her unique but is now realizing that she needs to let it go while the second verse describes how distance can make things seem smaller and insignificant. The singer no longer sees her past fears and doubts as controlling factors and sets out to test her own limits, with no one to tell her what's right or wrong. The singer embraces her newfound freedom in the chorus, declaring that she is "one with the wind and sky" and won't be held back anymore.

Interestingly, "Let It Go" was originally written as a villain's song, but was later reworked to become the empowering anthem it is today. The song's release skyrocketed Menzel to international fame, and she went on to perform it at the 86th Academy Awards, receiving a standing ovation. The song won Best Original Song at the 86th Academy Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, as well as numerous other awards. "Let It Go" has since become a cultural phenomenon and has been covered and parodied numerous times, from classrooms to late-night TV shows.
