Idiot Flesh was a talented and musically discordant band blending by a wide… Read Full Bio ↴Idiot Flesh was a talented and musically discordant band blending by a wide array of influences ranging from funk to prog rock and heavy metal as well as aspects of Eastern European Folk, Opera & Butoh dance performances. Formed in Oakland, California, USA in 1985 under the name Acid Rain with the demo album "We Were All Very Worried." They eventually changed their name to Idiot Flesh prior to the release of their first album in 1990. After Idiot Flesh disbanded in the late 90's, lead singer Nils Frykdahl and bassist/producer Dan Rathbun later formed Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Known to tour the US in a converted city bus with Rathbun as the driver/mechanic, with the windshield destination banner of HELL. Besides their wild performances which embodied a "rock against rock" ethos, they were also known to defy classification with marching band routines, performing puppet shows, and playing household items as instruments (in tune). After finding few financial rewards for their increasingly complex stage show, Idiot Flesh disbanded in 1998.

Oh man. I've had this on cassette since about 1988, when I was their biggest fan outside of Barrington. I digitized it in probably 2008. The tape never sounded good and was even worse 20 years later, so the digital version is pretty bad. This sounds great--thank you.

I used to have this on CD from a file that I downloaded on a torrent site called demonoid (now shut down). It had tons of rare stuff on it, with early idiot flesh/acid rain being one of them. This and Tales of infinite knowledge and sure death are my favorite material from these guys by far. For some reason I just couldnt get into later idiot flesh, and SGM nearly as much. But this, THIS right here will forever be an obscure gem. Great upload

You can really hear how this would evolve into later Idiot Flesh and (later on) SGM as well as FSE. It's still pretty funky, especially in comparison to the strong metal influences of SGM and FSE.

If you like this, you might also like some of the other projects Nils Frykdahl ( vocalist and guitarist. He also plays flute!) been involved in, like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum ( fantastic), Faun Fables, and Free Salamander Exhibit. Very talented people and very interesting stuff! As for this album we're listening to here, I personally can't get enough of 'In My Mind' and 'Sleep'....so good.

We Were All Very Worried was a cassette only release. VERY rare, you can buy it for around $600.
Tales was only on vinyl, it goes for $65.
They were ripped from my own copy.

I emailed Gene some time ago, he's very very hard to get a hold of is what I've heard from people who's been friends with him in the past. He still has a bunch of Idiot Flesh material and a bunch of stuff that is unreleased and seems to have been more than willing to share but he hasn't wrote back to me in a year.
