I'm never going to lose any of my old letters
They'll stay with me, until I can see
Until I can see that I'm no one
They'll stay with me, until I can see
Until I can see that I'm no one
So don't slight it off 'cause you'll be fined
Don't start slighting off 'cause you'll be fined
All you ever do is build it up inside
I'm not really sure of all this pressure
I'm never going to lose any of my old letters
They'll stay with me, until I can see
Until I can see that I'm no one
So don't slight it off 'cause you'll be fined
Don't start slighting off 'cause you'll be fined
All you ever do is build it up inside
All you ever do is build it up inside
You smoke too much when you talk too much
And when I argue Syd Barrett makes me laugh
I laugh at your conversational skills, or lack of
I laugh at your conversational skills, or lack of
I'm not really sure of all this pressure
I'm never going to lose any of my old letters
They'll stay with me, until I can see
Until I can see that I'm no one
They'll stay with me, until I can see
Until I can see that I'm no one
So don't slight it off 'cause you'll be fined
Don't start slighting off 'cause you'll be fined
All you ever do is build it up inside
All you ever do is build it up inside
You smoke too much when you talk too much
And when I argue Syd Barrett makes me laugh
I laugh at your conversational skills, or lack of
I laugh at your conversational skills, or lack of
[Repeat: x10]
'Cause when I argue I see shapes
You smoke too much when you talk too much
And when I argue sit back it makes me laugh
I laugh at your conversational skills, or lack of
I laugh at your conversational skills, or lack of
The song "When I Argue I See Shapes" by Idlewild is a reflection of feelings of pressure and uncertainty. The repeated line "I'm not really sure of all this pressure" highlights the sense of being unable to cope with the expectations and demands put upon oneself. The singer is holding onto their old letters, which represent their past and perhaps provide comfort and reassurance. However, until they can see that they are "no one," they feel trapped in a cycle of pressure and uncertainty.
The line "All you ever do is build it up inside" could be interpreted as a message to someone who is not expressing their emotions and bottling them up, ultimately leading to negative feelings. The line "When I argue Syd Barrett makes me laugh" suggests that in moments of tension, the singer finds amusement in the music and lyrics of Syd Barrett, the former frontman of Pink Floyd who suffered from mental health issues.
The repeated phrase "when I argue I see shapes" is open to interpretation but could be seen as a reference to experiencing visual hallucinations during times of stress and anxiety.
Overall, the song seems to be grappling with the challenges of navigating difficult emotions and maintaining a sense of self in the face of pressure and uncertainty.
