Little Know It All
Iggy Pop Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm the kid that no one knows
I live a life I never chose
But these thoughts in my mind
Are my own, my own

I'm face to face with the unknown
My scary movie will be shown
I've got one evil mind
Of my own, of my own

We take from one another
And never stop to wonder
How it feels from the other side
Well nothing lasts forever
When stupid turns to clever
Why are you surprised?

Little know it all
Ten bucks in my hand
Little know it all
Don't cry I understand

I'm a target of the smart
They've got ambition I've got heart
Analysed and tagged
Before I start

So tell me
Who can I respect
I feel a leash around my neck
I find out there's shame
In the game

We take from one another
And never stop to wonder
How it feels from the other side
Well nothing lasts forever
When stupid turns to clever
Why are you surprised?

And I feel like
I'm caught outside the box
And I feel like
I'm sleeping when I'm not

(Lookin' for the real thing)
(Lookin' for the real thing)

We take from one another
And never stop to wonder
How it feels from the other side
Well nothing lasts forever
When stupid turns to clever
Why are you surprised?

Little know it all
Ten bucks in my hand
Little know it all
Don't cry I understand
Little know it all
Ten bucks in my hand
Don't cry I understand

You'll never know it all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Little Know It All" by Iggy Pop discusses the feeling of isolation and frustration with societal norms, with an emphasis on the younger generation's lack of agency in determining their own paths in life. The song reflects on Iggy Pop's own experiences with feeling like an outsider in the music industry and society in general.

The opening verses of the song establish the feeling of being an unknown entity, existing under the radar; living an unchosen life while grappling with personal thoughts and emotions. The lyrics imply a sense of impending doom as the singer imagines themselves as the leading actor in a horror movie. The following stanzas discuss the pressure placed on the younger generation to conform to societal norms and expectations, with the singer feeling as though they are being analyzed and labelled before they can even start.

The chorus, "Little know it all, ten bucks in my hand/Don't cry, I understand, you'll never know it all," appears to be directed at anyone who might have underestimated or neglected the singer, either professionally or personally. The singer acknowledges that they are aware of their minor position but are still determined and unashamed of their own values and perspective.

Overall, "Little Know It All" offers a poignant critique of rigid societal expectations and calls for individualism and independent thinking.

why can't modern music today be like this? it gets us pumped up, you can dance to it, and it has a great beat. it fits perfectly to what people today consider great music. anyway, I listen to this all the time, and promise it will never get old
