Now I Wanna Be Your Dog
Iggy Pop Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So messed up I want you here
And in my room I want you here
And now we're gonna be face to face
And I'll lay right down in my favorite place
Yeah you know what that is

Now I want to be your dog
Now I want to be your dog
Now I want to be your dog
(C'mon) (I want to be your dog you know it)

Ooh give it to me
Now I'm ready to close my eyes
Yes now I'm ready to close my mind
Now I'm ready to feel your hands
Lose my heart on the burning sand

Now I want to be your dog
Now I want to be your dog
Now I want to be your dog
(C'mon) (I want to be your dog you know it)

Do it
Yeah that's right

So messed up I want you here
And in my room I want you here
And now we're gonna be face to face
And I'll lay right down in my favorite place
Yeah you know what that is

Now I want to be your dog
Now I want to be your dog
Now I want to be your dog
(C'mon) (I want to be your dog you know it)

Well come on
I'll be your dog

Overall Meaning

The song “I Wanna Be Your Dog” by Iggy Pop is a straightforward, primitive love song that borders on obsession. The lyrics are repetitive with only slight variation, so one can’t help the feeling of urgency and desperation. The singer seems to be in some sort of trance or state of mind where nothing else exists except his object of affection. He appears disoriented and out of touch with reality with the idea of wanting to be his lover’s dog, an animal that is completely submissive, loyal, and obedient to its master. The lines “So messed up I want you here, and in my room I want you here, and now we're gonna be face to face” suggest that he’s overcompensating for his emotional vulnerability by taking control of the situation physically.

The line “Now I’m ready to feel your hands, lose my heart on the burning sand” implies that the singer is no longer in control of his desires and is willing to succumb to his lover’s every whim, even if it causes him pain. The chorus is repeated three times throughout the song for emphasis, and with each repetition, the singer appears to become more and more frenetic, as if his animalistic impulses are overtaking him. In the end, he relinquishes all his power to his lover, volunteering to be her dog.

Here are corrections to incorrect lyrics - outrageously, stupidly incorrect: The first line is, "ILL WIND off the river". (And that's ill, not I'll.) The second line is, "smoke stacks fade to BLACK". Second verse: "I've made my bed but I can't REST my head". And "so much COULD be misunderstood". Bridge: "WELL maybe it's just my life". An artist crafts his work meticulously , then this is what happens to it. Disgusting.
