Cold Metal
Iggy pop and the Stoogees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I played tag in the auto graveyard
I looked up at the radio tower
Rag tent by the railroad tracks
Concrete poured over steel bridge
Pondered my fate while they built the interstate

I'm a product of America
From the morgue to the prisons
Cold metal, when I start my band
Cold metal, in my garbage can
Cold metal, gets in my blood
And my attitude

Yeah, uh-huh

Threw my hide in an automobile
Heard a song called "Drive the Wheel"
Truckers, trailers, tractors caught me workin'

This is the song of my heritage
From the bad to the Buddha
Cold metal, that's what it be
Cold metal, from sea to sea
Cold metal, it's how we win
And also how we sin
How we sin, how we sin, how we sin, how we sin

Cold metal, in the afternoon
Sounds lovely like a Hendrix tune
Cold metal, it's the father of beat
The mother of the street
Cold metal, it rolls on by
Cold metal, gonna raise it high
Cold metal, it'll even fly
Rust buckets in the sky
Cold metal, got to be
Skeleton of the free
Cold metal, it's gotta be
Better save a tree

Save a tree, save a tree, save a tree, save a tree
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Iggy Pop's "Cold Metal" touch on themes of industrialization and American culture. The first stanza describes a setting of decay and abandonment--an auto graveyard, railroad tracks, and a bridge--while the singer contemplates his fate as the world changes around him. The next couplet, "I'm a product of America / From the morgue to the prisons," invokes an image of the American dream gone wrong. The singer sees himself as the end result of a system that values growth and wealth over human life.

The chorus of the song, "Cold metal, when I start my band / Cold metal, in my garbage can / Cold metal, gets in my blood / And my attitude," introduces the idea that metal--the material of industrialization--is contagious. It infects the singer's very being, making him a part of the system he dislikes. The rest of the song references the modes of transportation that define America--cars, trucks, and airplanes--which are all made of cold metal. Even when the singer tries to find beauty in the material, as he does with the line "Cold metal, in the afternoon / Sounds lovely like a Hendrix tune," he acknowledges that it's also responsible for the destruction of the environment ("Better save a tree").

In short, "Cold Metal" is a lament of the modern age, and the ways that industrialization has changed the world for the worse. The lyrics are a commentary on the ways we live and work, through the lens of someone who's been impacted by the dehumanizing aspects of capitalism.

G-r-r-r-reat Song!
Try finding the live version on David Letterman. Iggy's in TOP form.
There's a lead guitarist with really long, curly hair. I found out later it was none other than the GREAT Steve Jones!

Letterman: "You guys alright?"
"Anybody get hurt?" (LoL~°)
Peace. Stay Healthy!

Iggy pop and Steve jones..a deadly combination

@Ckom-Tunes

I went to his concert the night before I wrote the biggest exam of my life. While my fellow students were cram studying for the Bar I was at the university theatre listening to Iggy rock this shit out. I was so relaxed the next day I wrote that fucker and ended up scoring in the 99th percentile. I’m convinced going to that concert was one of the best decisions of my life!
