You Gave It Your Best
Ignant Benches Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I know we were kind when it started
I miss it though
Yeah, we paid in the end
You gave it your best

And it was all okay
Memories all over the place
Oh, I know she′d say
"What we had was great"

Mary, please
I'll open up
Desire to fight′ll dissolve

Fine, let it go
I've been sick of the slow
And our faces don't look right
We were kind, never mean
You can′t see what I see
Believe me though
You gave it your best

And it was all okay
Memories all over the place
Oh, I doubt she′d say
"What we had was great"

This time, let it go
I've been sick of the slow
And our faces don′t look right
We were kind on the phone
Mary needs some alone time, yeah
You gave it your best

Time falls, met so many lost causes
I'm on the floor now
Trying my best
Time′s gone, lost so many

Times I couldn't get between us
You gave it your best

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of You Gave It Your Best encapsulate a bittersweet reflection on a past relationship which has come to an end. The opening lines, "And I know we were kind when it started / I miss it though" suggest a feeling of nostalgia for the initial innocence and warmth of the relationship, which has been tarnished by subsequent events. The line "Yeah, we paid in the end" suggests that the relationship ultimately failed, despite the good intentions of both parties. However, the chorus exudes an air of acceptance and appreciation for what was shared: "You gave it your best / And it was all okay / Memories all over the place / Oh, I know she'd say / 'What we had was great'". The repetition of the phrase "let it go" in the verses and the bridge suggest a sense of resignation and an acceptance that the relationship has come to an end.

The strokes ?

@YoussefSelim8

Wdym?

@nurpooo1962

@@YoussefSelim8 As a fan of the strokes, I find the rhythm and the way Anson sings at 0:45 quite similar.

@YoussefSelim8

@@nurpooo1962 I mean I see it but why complain. They are influenced by the strokes which I like and they do it in a good way. Also a lot of famous bands are influenced by the strokes

@nurpooo1962

@@YoussefSelim8 Im not complainin, just say that sounds similar but in a good way

@Decadency11

Almost an exact copie of The Strokes. Old bands get copied and old things are rehashed for the young kids which are the targeted market. The young one's are not old enough or there to remember, but nothing really has changed since about 10,000 b.c.
