Bob & Friends Over There
Ijahman Levi Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I saw in a dream Bob Marley
Playing guitar singing Kaya over there
I hear a distant sound when I look around
It was Jacob Miller
In his bionic voice everything is great over there
Peter Tosh was there legalizing the atmosphere
Marcus Garvey was there speaking words of prophecy
Ijahman was there playing my instruments of ten strings
In my peaceful rest it's like a slice of death
Somewhere over there I'm with my friends in the spirit
In my peaceful rest it's like a slice of death
Somewhere over there I'm with my friends in the spirit
Just the other day
I saw in a dream Bob Marley
Playing guitar singing Kaya over there
I hear a distant sound when I look around
It was Jacob Miller
In his bionic voice everything is great over there
Peter Tosh was there legalizing the atmosphere
Marcus Garvey was there speaking words of prophecy
Count Ossie was there along with Carlton on congo drums
Ijahman was there playing my instruments of ten strings
In my peaceful rest it's like a slice of death
Somewhere over there I'm with my friends in the spirit
In my peaceful rest it's like a slice of death
Somewhere over there I'm with my friends in the spirit
Man called Bob Marley, Jacob Miller, brother Peter Tosh, Ijahman was there
In "Bob & Friends Over There" by Ijahman Levi, the singer recounts a dream he had where he saw several reggae legends, including Bob Marley, Jacob Miller, Peter Tosh, Marcus Garvey, Count Ossie, and himself, gathered together in a spiritual realm. As the dream unfolds, he describes Marley playing guitar and singing "Kaya," while Miller contributes his "bionic voice" to the atmosphere, and Tosh sets about legalizing the environment. Garvey, an influential Pan-Africanist leader, offers words of prophecy, and Ossie and Carlton provide the percussion. Throughout it all, the singer plays his "instruments of ten strings," basking in the peace and camaraderie that he finds there.
The lyrics to "Bob & Friends Over There" celebrate a lost generation of musicians and activists who sought to spread positivity and unity through their art. By gathering them together in a dreamlike afterlife, Ijahman Levi suggests that their legacies continue to resonate and inspire, even after they have passed on. Whether or not the dream represents a literal belief in an afterlife, it serves as a powerful metaphor for the enduring influence of Marley, Miller, Tosh, and the other figures who shaped reggae music and culture.

What a gorgeous tribute to his fellow countrymen and reggae superstars. Bob, Jacob and Peter, the pride of my country as well as Marcus Garvey. They went through so much for our people 😢 They make me really proud to be Jamaican. It's really sweet how he says in the song he's with them again even though they're gone and he says the 'everything is great' like Jacob always said. Sad but uplifting too
