His first album, Haile I Hymn, was released on Island Records in 1978. He became Ijahman Levi after a religious conversion to the Rastafari movement in prison where he was between 1972 and 1974. It and the three following records preached Rastafari movement as well as Twelve Tribes of Israel doctrine.

Classic Roots, perfection. I thought about this masterpiece last evening running the bass line thru my head, so upful, so living, then today l worked next door to a less old Rasta, l looked over the fence to his surprise l asked him to name his best Reggae tune, he mentioned a few , l hummed the levi bass line, sung afew words ,tingles down my spine, eyes moistened, memories of the Great Jah Shaka running the tune.
