All I Can Do Is Cry
Ike & Tina Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard church bells ringing,
I heard a choir singing.
I saw my love walk down the aisle.
On her finger, he placed a ring, oh, oh.

I saw them holding hands
She was standing there with my man.
I heard them promise 'til death do us part.
Each word was a pain in my heart.

Oh. All I could do, all I could do was cry.
All I could do was cry.
I was losing the man that I loved,
and all I could do was cry.

And now the wedding is over,
rice has been thrown over their heads.
For them, life has just begun but mine is at an end

Oh. All I could do, all I could do was cry.
All I could do was cry.

I was losing the man that I loved,
And all I could do was cry.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ike & Tina Turner's song "Honest I Do" are telling the story of a woman who witnesses the man that she loves getting married to another woman. The singer hears the church bells ringing, sees the love of her life walking down the aisle, and watches as he places a ring on the finger of another woman. The singer is devastated and heartbroken, as she hears the promises of the wedding vows and feels each word as a pain in her heart.

The second verse continues the story, as the singer sees the new couple holding hands and realizes that she is losing the man she loves. She cannot hold back the tears as she watches the wedding ceremony, feeling like her life is coming to an end while theirs is just beginning. The song ends with the singer lamenting the end of her relationship with the man, as all she can do is cry.
