Goodbye So Long
Ike & Tina Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Goodbye, Baby, You're drivin' me crazy.
You thought you had me baby, but I was infatuated,
Things ain't what they used to be and you can't do a darn thing for me.

Hey, ooh waa ooh waa ooh waa ooh waa
So long
Ooh ooh ooh ooh waa ooh waa
So long

I said things ain't what they used to be and you can't do a darn thing for me

I knew you was cheatin, boy it wasn't worth me competin', now
I ain't gone cry no more, I'm gonna let you go
I said things ain't what they used to be, and you can't do a darn thing for me

Chorus

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ike & Tina Turner's Goodbye So Long reflect the emotions of someone who has had enough of a bad relationship and is ready to move on. The lines "Goodbye, Baby, You're drivin' me crazy" convey a sense of frustration, as the singer has reached her breaking point with her partner. She continues by stating that her partner thought they had her, but her feelings for him were only infatuation. This could suggest that the singer has come to the realization that love does not always last and that her partner was never really right for her. She also says that "Things ain't what they used to be", implying that the relationship has changed over time and that the love that once existed is no longer there.

The chorus of the song is simple and straightforward, repeating the phrase "So long" several times. These lines emphasize the singer's readiness to move on from her partner and put the relationship behind her. She has accepted that the relationship is over and is firm in her decision to let go of her partner. The lyrics "I knew you was cheatin', boy it wasn't worth me competin', now I ain't gone cry no more" further emphasize the singer's strength and independence as she acknowledges that she deserves better than a partner who cheats on her.

Overall, Goodbye So Long is a powerful song about moving on from a toxic relationship and finding the strength to let go. It conveys a sense of self-awareness and independence that is empowering and relatable to many listeners.
