Poor Fool
Ike & Tina Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to tell all of you that ain't doin' nothin' for me
And can't do nothing for me
You should tend to your business and leave mine alone
Because as far as this man is concerned
I wanna tell ya he's mine (you've been a fool too long)
Now let me tell ya he's mine (wake up and he's gone)
We know how you feel
He mine (but is it love for real)
I'm not ashamed (poor fool)
Cause he's my man (says who?)
And he's mine (you've been a fool too long)

Now listen, this man is mine he's my every thought
I'd give him Prussia if it could be bought
I'm not ashamed of nothing I do
I'd guide a missile if he told me to
'cause he's mine (poor fool)
I know he's mine (says who?)
The man is mine (you been a fool too long)

And listen, if I make my bed hard
That's where I'm gonna sleep
You people talking means nothing to me
I work my fingers right down to the bone
Doin' the things to please him right or wrong
'cause he's mine (poor fool)
I know he's mine (says who?)
The man is mine (you been a fool too long)

Ohh he's a mine (you've been a fool too long)
And let me tell ya he's mine
(Wake up and he's gone)
(We know how you feel)
(But is it love for real?)
I'm not ashamed (poor fool)
'cause he's my man (says who?)
And he's mine (you've been a fool too long)

And listen, I'm with my man in every way
Don't keep him hoppin' each and every day
I'll never hurt him or make him frown
I'm with my man if he's up or down
'cause he's mine (poor fool)
I know he's mine (says who?)
The man is mine (you've been a fool too long)

He's a mine (you've been a fool too long)
Now let me tell you he's mine (wake up and he's gone)

(We know how you feel)
He's mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ike & Tina Turner's song 'Poor Fool' is about a woman's passionate love and extreme possessiveness towards her significant other. She's telling those who aren't doing anything for her and can't do anything for her to tend to their business, leave her alone and let her have her man. To her, this man belongs to her, and she's not ashamed of her feelings for him. She would do anything and everything to please him, and it doesn't matter whether it's right or wrong.

She addresses the concern that people might think she's a fool for loving this man so much, but it doesn't matter to her because he's hers. And if she makes her bed hard, that's where she's going to sleep. She promises that she will never hurt him or make him frown and will be with him no matter his circumstances.

The song expresses the woman's obsession with her lover and her possessiveness, which borders on the extreme. It also reflects how some relationships could be toxic and unhealthy even though they may seem passionate.

In 1964 after hearing this song on a Jerry Blavatt program on WHAT, I wanted to get this record - the 45 - and I bought a ticket to Chicago from Philadelphia to go buy it. It cost me a total of $55.00 round trip on the train including the record. There were magazines then that advertised 45s for sale around the country. I couldn't find it at home so it was important enough for me to travel for it. And the train ride was neat. I got a guy to serve me an old fashioned in the club car. And I was 16.

Johnson Projects. 112th Street between Lex and Third. Summer days of portsble record players playing this, the Crests and the Shirelles and summer nights of transistor radios by your pillow asking whar's your name and insisting that there's no other like my bsby.
Good memories.
