You Are Everything
Ike & Tina Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me to love another,
You'll regret it all some day:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
You told me once, dear, you really loved me
and no one else could come between.
But now you've left me and love another;
you have shattered all my dreams:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey

You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

My husband, Gary Knight wrote this one with Bob Crewe. It was produced by Crewe after he was given the opportunity to record the GREAT Tina Turner! It was the follow up to "River Deep, Mountain High" which, in my husband's opinion was the most incredible Ike & Tina recording EVER! Gary says it was too bad that Spector had already made enemies with US disc jockeys by that time or River would have been her biggest US hit ever! If you get a minute, listen to the River Deep recording ... you will probably agree that River was like listening to "Everything Under the Sun" .... by the way, that was Gary's immediate comment after Bob Crewe played it for the office staff in his huge office "Big Red Speakers"!!!!!!!!! Bob replied, "WRITE IT!"

So you’re saying that Phil Spector had enemies with some radio stations and that’s the reason why RDMH was such a billboard 100 fail?
That’s amazing on a part, but very possible at twice.

@adambrocklehurst4211

The production on this is really interesting, it's been made quite dark by the violins, and Tina is giving us Otis Redding.

@theboyfromxtown

An acetate of this was found in Portobello Market in London in the late 70's. I've had it on cassette since those days. It was so rare in those days

Tina and the wall of Phil Spector genius sound...BRAVA

@KCStuffedAnimal

This recording is far superior to the Ronettes' version. Too bad it never got a stereo mix.

Listened to this when it was first posted. Returning in May 2023 to say I love you, Tina. Thanks for the music.
