Respect
Ike Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What you want
Honey you've got it
And what you need
Baby you've got it

All I'm asking
Is for a little respect when I come home
Do me wrong
Honey if you wanna
You can do me wrong
Honey while I am gone

But all I'm asking for
Is for a little respect when I come home

Hey little girl, you're so sweeter than honey
And I am about to just give you all my money

All I'm asking for
Is a little respect when I come home

Hey little girl, you're sweeter than honey
And I am about to give you all my money

But all I want you to do
Just give it, give it
Respect when I come home

Respect is what I want
Respect is what I need
Respect is what I want
Respect is what I need

Got to, got to have it
Got to, got to have it

Gotta, got to have it
Gotta, got to have it

Overall Meaning

The song Respect by Ike & Tina Turner is an upbeat and powerful plea for respect from a woman's partner. The singer is confident that she deserves and has earned respect from her partner, and she is asking for it in return. The lyrics acknowledge the singer's strengths and capabilities, and she is unapologetic in her request for respect. The repetition of the phrase "All I'm asking for is a little respect when I come home" reinforces the importance of this request and highlights the singer's determination.

The song can also be interpreted as a feminist anthem, especially when considering the time period in which it was released (1960s). The singer is demanding equality and fair treatment in her relationship, which can be viewed as a message of empowerment for women. The use of the phrase "do me wrong" suggests that the singer is aware of the potential for mistreatment and is willing to accept it, but only on the condition that she is respected when she comes home.

Overall, the song Respect is a powerful and empowering message that resonates with many individuals who have experienced mistreatment or discrimination. It reminds us of the importance of standing up for ourselves and demanding respect, even in the face of adversity.

So groovy and powerful. Immense respect to anyone who can handle singing a song like “Respect”.

Ohhhh yes! Now we're talking! Hitting the groove with the Ikettes dancing and doing their thang! Tina blasting us all with that Soul! And Ike sporting that "FRO."

Outstanding performance! Tina, of course, the blessed goddess she is killed it, those horns were tight AF, the singers were wild and everyone else was just spot on. I hesitate to say anything nice about Ike (because he was a huge piece of shit) but his guitar playing was fire.

KEEPONROCKINKID

First in 1965 Otis Redding had a superb Version. Then in 1967 Aretha Franklin had a bigger hit and made it hers. This blistering version by Tina is superb. All great versions of a Soul Classic.

Dino

better than Aretha's version
