I Am Zero
Iko Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I slept in your drive for a month
but you didn't see
I watched both the legs
you uncrossed in the library
and I would always fall beneath your spell
this unrequited nowhere love is hell

and I can't talk to you because
I'm not made of flesh and bones
and there's a box where my heart should be
all of the wires are crossed inside of me

I sent you a card but I swear it was
thrown away
Now it's getting dark in the cold light of day
I'll pull all the pins that keep my soul in
and I would always fall beneath your spell
this unrequited nowhere love is hell

and I can't talk to you because
I'm not made of flesh and bones
and there's a box where my heart should be
all of the wires are crossed inside of me

I want you
but I am zero

Overall Meaning

The song "I Am Zero" by Iko is a heartbroken tale of unrequited love. The lyrics tell the story of someone who is deeply in love with another person, but is stuck in a painful cycle of unfulfilled desire. The singer has slept in their love interest's driveway for a month but has gone unnoticed. They have watched the person they love cross their legs in the library but cannot seem to catch their attention. The singer feels trapped by their love for the other person and unable to escape its grasp.

The chorus of the song highlights the singer's inability to truly connect with their love interest. They feel limited by their robotic nature, lamenting that they cannot talk to the object of their affection because they are not made of flesh and bones. The metaphor of a box where their heart should be alludes to the idea that they are unable to feel emotions in the way that humans usually do.

The song is a poignant exploration of the pain that comes with unrequited love. The singer feels powerless and stuck, unable to escape their feelings or connect with the person they love. In the end, they are resigned to the fact that they want their love interest, but they feel like nothing compared to them, hence the line "I want you, but I am zero."

@nokotan I felt the same way, I thought "I Am Zero" and "Hologram" were much better, but after listening to "All Time Low" a couple of times I realized it's pretty good. It really gets the band's concept across well. Three phenomenal songs.

If you've been "looking everywhere online" for the songs by Iko you needn't look further than their website where you can actually BUY their music and support them at the same time. Their two albums prior to their most recent release are well worth your time! (I Am Zero and Ludo Says Hi) By the way, I'm not affiliated with the band in any way. Just a humble fan. Enjoy!
