Illapu was exiled due to their very liberal viewpoints during the right-wing dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and returned to Chile in 1988. Their return was captured in the 1989 album `En Vivo: Parque La Bandera', which was a recording of their returning concert.
During their exile from Chile, they spent time in Europe in general and France in particular, where they gained a good amount of fame, as with other similar groups such as Inti Illimani and Los Calchakis.
Illapu comes from the Quechua word for "Lightning Bolt" (Quechua being the language of the Incan empire and still spoken by many Native American groups in South America).

(Luis A. Valdivia - J. Miguel Márquez)
Ya no basta moralizar
Ya no basta pontificar
Porque para fin de siglo
Millones perecerán
Vendarme los ojos
De nada me sirve
Creer que es para otros
Y cerrar la puerta
De nada me sirve
Porque va creciendo
El mal de fin de siglo
Síndrome de muerte
Cuido mis amores
Síndrome de muerte
Libre y protegido
Mis amores
Sincero positivo
Nos malquiere y acecha
El más duro enemigo
El dolor más odioso
Al amor conferido
Siembra crueles designios
Infectando cariños
Da al amor un delirio
Al horror nos margina
De caer un día mal herido
Hipodérmico y fatal
Quiero que estés a mi lado
Porque muchos me abandonarán
Síndrome de muerte
Cuido mis amores
Sincero positivo

The song Sincero Positivo by Illapu speaks to the need for sincerity and positivity in a world where millions of people will perish by the end of the century. The lyrics convey a message of urgency, pointing out that it's not enough to simply moralize or pontificate about the state of the world, but rather we need to actively work towards making it a better place. The song acknowledges that it can be easy to close our eyes to the problems around us, but that this is not a productive approach. Instead, the singer urges the listener to stay open, facing the world with sincerity and positivity, even in the face of great hardships.
The chorus of the song contains the line "Síndrome de muerte, cuido mis amores, sincero positivo," which translates to "Death syndrome, I care for my loved ones, sincere positive." The singer seems to be referring to a sense of impending doom that pervades the world, as well as the need to protect those we care about. The phrase "sincero positivo" can be interpreted in a few different ways - it could mean being genuinely positive and optimistic, or it could refer to being HIV-positive, which was a major global health crisis during the time period when the song was released.
Overall, Sincero Positivo is a powerful call to action, urging listeners to face the problems of the world with honesty and positivity, even when things seem bleak. The song highlights the need for compassion and unity in the face of great challenges, and reminds us that we are stronger when we work together.
