Illapu was exiled due to their very liberal viewpoints during the right-wing dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and returned to Chile in 1988. Their return was captured in the 1989 album `En Vivo: Parque La Bandera', which was a recording of their returning concert.
During their exile from Chile, they spent time in Europe in general and France in particular, where they gained a good amount of fame, as with other similar groups such as Inti Illimani and Los Calchakis.
Illapu comes from the Quechua word for "Lightning Bolt" (Quechua being the language of the Incan empire and still spoken by many Native American groups in South America).

para que volemos todos
ven acá sueña de nuevo
queda aún un largo trecho.
Volarás, volarás.
Enfrentándote a los vientos
castigando los tormentos
vamos juntos por el mundo.
Volarás, volarás, volarás, volarás
The lyrics of Illapu's song Volarás talk about dreaming big and setting out on a journey to achieve those dreams. The singer encourages the listener to come up with a plan or a path that will help them soar and reach the heights they aspire to. The singer acknowledges that the journey might be long and difficult, but despite the challenges, they will keep pushing forward together. The lyrics emphasize the importance of perseverance, facing adversity and finding pure air, which could be taken as a metaphor for finding a sense of direction and purpose.
The chorus "Volarás, volarás" is a powerful refrain that reinforces this message of hope and determination to achieve the desired outcome. It's almost as if the singer is motivating the listener like a cheerleader, urging them to keep their eyes on a goal and stay committed to it. The song's use of imagery, such as the "winds" and "air," suggests the idea of freedom, motion, and possibility. It's both a call to action and a promise that they will succeed.
The song embodies the spirit of perseverance, hope, and determination, and it could resonate with anyone who feels stuck, helpless or anyone who wants to achieve something in their lives. Its symbolism and metaphors make it all the more powerful and engaging, and it's a song that can inspire people to take on whatever challenges come their way.
