Illapu was exiled due to their very liberal viewpoints during the right-wing dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and returned to Chile in 1988. Their return was captured in the 1989 album `En Vivo: Parque La Bandera', which was a recording of their returning concert.
During their exile from Chile, they spent time in Europe in general and France in particular, where they gained a good amount of fame, as with other similar groups such as Inti Illimani and Los Calchakis.
Illapu comes from the Quechua word for "Lightning Bolt" (Quechua being the language of the Incan empire and still spoken by many Native American groups in South America).

'Sobreviviendo' dije, 'sobreviviendo'
Y nosotros apenas sobreviviendo, sobreviviendo
The lyrics to the song Sobreviviendo by Illapu are a powerful commentary on the human condition, exploring themes of survival, tragedy, and hope. The song opens with the singer being asked about how they live, to which the response is "sobreviviendo" or surviving. The singer then goes on to explain that they have a poem that they have written over a thousand times, in which they proclaim that as long as there are people who promote death and weapons for war on earth, they will continue to survive. The song describes the struggles of living in a world where tragedy and danger are always present, and how the singer has lost their ability to laugh and enjoy life as they used to.
The lyrics then shift to reflect upon the tragedy of Hiroshima, and the pain of memories that continue to hurt the singer. The singer describes the sadness and desperation they feel as they try to find meaning in a world of suffering. They long for the ability to choose their own death instead of simply surviving day to day. Despite this, the song ends on a note of hope, as the singer imagines a world where even animals are fighting for life, and humanity can rise to the occasion to join them in their fight.

Me preguntaron como vivía, me preguntaron.
Sobreviviendo –dije–, sobreviviendo.
tristes y errantes hombres, sobreviviendo.
Sobreviviendo, sobreviviendo,
sobreviviendo.
Ya no quiero ser solo un sobreviviente;
Cómo me reiría ese loco día;
ellos manifestándose por la vida
y nosotros apenas sobreviviendo.
