ILLUMINATE manage to combine classical elements, dance rhythms, electronic sound collages, romantic piano parts and heavy guitars without being unfaithful to their typical, unmistakable sound. After seventeen years of band history, 12 studio albums, world-wide life-performances, and having an enormous fan-base, ILLUMINATE are one of the most successful acts of the Alternative / Dark Wave-segment.

His works incorporate headbanging elements of Hard Bass Music with Melodic Trance Synths into Modern Electronic Dance Music. The title itself translates to "without makeup," which suggests that the singer is no longer hiding behind a facade. The song starts off with the singer saying that they can only laugh at themselves now, suggesting that they've been through some tough times and have come out the other side.
The tone then turns slightly more bitter, as the singer says that the person they're addressing has become a stranger to them. They then clarify that they never really loved this person, despite what they may have said in the past. However, the singer then reveals that they are actually crying inside, despite the tough exterior they're trying to put on.
