ILLUMINATE manage to combine classical elements, dance rhythms, electronic sound collages, romantic piano parts and heavy guitars without being unfaithful to their typical, unmistakable sound. After seventeen years of band history, 12 studio albums, world-wide life-performances, and having an enormous fan-base, ILLUMINATE are one of the most successful acts of the Alternative / Dark Wave-segment.

"Abschied" is a powerful and emotional song by Illuminate about separation and death. The lyrics express the idea that death cannot diminish the memory and importance of a loved one. The first verse talks about how the person singing the song doesn't know if the person they are singing to will one day be the one to take their life or if they will still be alive long after the singer is gone. The sentiment is that no matter what happens, that person's name and place in the singer's heart will never be forgotten because they have left an indelible mark on their life. The second verse is more somber and talks about the sad reality that sometimes people leave and don't come back. The singer is waiting in the empty hallway and sees images of them together walking across green fields in their dreams.
