Scarcely another band among the German-speaking Alternative /(Dark)Wave-scene has polarized media and audience within the last fifteen years as much as ILLUMINATE. Either praised up to the skies or torn apart as "Schlager" (a German derogatory term for bad pop songs) – be that as it may, for the last decade, Johannes Berthold and his band have left their mark on the Dark scene...
ILLUMINATE manage to combine classical elements, dance rhythms, electronic sound collages, romantic piano parts and heavy guitars without being unfaithful to their typical, unmistakable sound. After seventeen years of band history, 12 studio albums, world-wide life-performances, and having an enormous fan-base, ILLUMINATE are one of the most successful acts of the Alternative / Dark Wave-segment.

Apokalypse
Illuminate Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Prince of darkness now retires
Packs of human wolves are howling
Chants of damned by Satan's Fire
Fire!
Who's the one to save your life?
Who's the one to save your life?
The final day - the final battle
Final Judgement's Call
Bleeding souls of Armageddon
Bloodshed plagues us all
Blessed enough to see the light
Blind enough to walk the night
Who's the one to save your life?
Who's the one to save your life?
Just turn the night in day
Just turn the night in day
The lyrics to Illuminate's song Apokalypse paint a picture of the end of days, the apocalypse. The opening lines speak of the arrival of a holy light at dawn, which signals the retreat of the Prince of Darkness. Packs of human wolves howl and chants of the damned signal a fiery end. The question is posed as to who will save our lives as the final day and battle approaches. The final judgment's call and the bleeding souls of Armageddon signify the ultimate bloodshed that plagues us all. The singer suggests that some are blessed enough to see the light, but others are blind and must walk in the darkness. The final lines of the song suggest that we can turn the night into day.
The lyrics capture the feeling of impending doom and the question of who can save us at our darkest hour. The image of human wolves and chants of the damned paint a demonic picture of the end of days. The contrast of blessed souls seeing the light and others being blind and stumbling in the darkness adds to the intensity of the song. The final lines suggest that we have the power to turn the darkness in our lives into light. It is a song that speaks of the human condition and the struggles we all face.
