Either praised up to the skies or torn apart as "Schlager" (a German derogatory term for bad pop songs) – be that as it may, for the last decade, Johannes Berthold and his band have left their mark on the Dark scene...
ILLUMINATE manage to combine classical elements, dance rhythms, electronic sound collages, romantic piano parts and heavy guitars without being unfaithful to their typical, unmistakable sound. After seventeen years of band history, 12 studio albums, world-wide life-performances, and having an enormous fan-base, ILLUMINATE are one of the most successful acts of the Alternative / Dark Wave-segment.

His works incorporate headbanging elements of Hard Bass Music with Melodic Trance Synths into Modern Electronic Dance Music. The lyrics of "Du liebst mich nicht!" by Illuminate are about an unrequited love. The singer talks about how they are constantly being hurt by the words of the person they love. Despite being in a free fall and seeing the love of their life leave them behind, the singer stays resolute, accepting the painful reality. The title of the song is repeated extensively throughout its doom and gloom lyrics.
The song's lyrics take the form of a break-up song but one that focuses on unrequited love. We see the singer going through the heart-wrenching realization of their love being doomed. In a way, the song is about coming to grips with rejection - both by someone who does not love you and equally well by someone who you no longer love. The singer gains a newfound clarity as they recuperate from the psychological blow dealt by the person they love.
