ILLUMINATE manage to combine classical elements, dance rhythms, electronic sound collages, romantic piano parts and heavy guitars without being unfaithful to their typical, unmistakable sound. After seventeen years of band history, 12 studio albums, world-wide life-performances, and having an enormous fan-base, ILLUMINATE are one of the most successful acts of the Alternative / Dark Wave-segment.

The song "Kein Lächeln mehr" by Illuminate is a melancholic reflection on the singer's state of mind. The opening line "Je suis de mon coeur le vampire" (which translates to "I am the vampire of my own heart") sets a haunting tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer describes themselves as one of the forsaken, condemned to eternal laughter but unable to smile themselves. They long to be a being made of pure, purifying flames, but instead, they can only see themselves reflected in the eyes of angels and demons. The singer's heart is filled with darkness, and even though they wish they could be a light for someone else, their words are drowned in the sea of eternal laughter, and they must do whatever that person asks of them, knowing that there is no more smile left for them.
