Either praised up to the skies or torn apart as "Schlager" (a German derogatory term for bad pop songs) – be that as it may, for the last decade, Johannes Berthold and his band have left their mark on the Dark scene...
ILLUMINATE manage to combine classical elements, dance rhythms, electronic sound collages, romantic piano parts and heavy guitars without being unfaithful to their typical, unmistakable sound. After seventeen years of band history, 12 studio albums, world-wide life-performances, and having an enormous fan-base, ILLUMINATE are one of the most successful acts of the Alternative / Dark Wave-segment.

In Schließ' die Augen!, Illuminate sings about a moment that has passed and cannot be taken back. The persona watches the object of their affection with every step and includes them in their dreams. They forget about themselves and lose themselves in the other's world, unable to see that nothing is holding the person back. The person will forget what the persona can never forget, and they will never see what the persona can see. The person closes their eyes and does not stand still; life goes on as if nothing happened. The persona wonders how they can hold onto the person when they flee from them, and what the person is looking for that they cannot see themselves. Despite the persona's attempts to accompany them, the person runs alone and never stops. Even though the object of their affection is with them, the persona feels alone and unable to let go. They have gotten lost in the other's life and cannot find their way back.
The lyrics contain powerful imagery that captures the emotional turmoil that the persona is experiencing. The song is about a one-sided love affair, where the persona is hopelessly in love with someone who does not feel the same way. The song speaks to the universal feeling of longing for someone who does not reciprocate our feelings. The chorus drives home the fact that the person will move on, but the persona will be stuck in the moment. The strong emotions, combined with the beautiful melody, make the song an incredibly powerful ballad of unrequited love that many people can relate to.
