Look Me In the Eye
Images In Vogue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well if we had a plan
And if I had the time
If you could hold my hand
And maybe you could smile
And when I die that′s fine
I never had the time

Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
What's gone wrong
Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
It′s been so long

And when you turn around
Will I be standing near
To catch you when you fall
No this is not a joke
Is this the truth I spoke
Tell me right now

Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
What's gone wrong
Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
It's been so long

Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
What′s gone wrong
Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
Won′t give you my time

Hey can't you see it′s no good
To really care for me
I just don't understand
Yeah I know you try to give me
A love I don′t deserve
Now I'm asking for more

Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
What′s gone wrong
Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
It's been so long

Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
What's gone wrong
Look me in the eye
Stop me if I lie
I won′t give you my time

My time
My time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Images In Vogue's song "Look Me In the Eye" convey a sense of longing, vulnerability, and introspection. The singer is expressing a desire for connection, stating that if they had a plan and more time, they would be able to fully engage with someone else. They yearn for physical affection, hoping that someone could hold their hand and bring a smile to their face. However, the singer also recognizes their own mortality, accepting the possibility of death without having had enough time to truly experience love and connection.

The repeated plea to "look me in the eye" signifies a desire for honesty and authenticity. The singer is asking for someone's undivided attention, wanting them to acknowledge any falsehoods or deceptions. They are seeking reassurance, questioning what has gone wrong in their interactions and relationships. The repeated line "stop me if I lie" suggests a longing for someone to hold them accountable and keep them grounded in truth.

The lyrics also hint at the singer's struggle with accepting love and care. They admit not fully understanding why someone tries to give them love they feel undeserving of. This reflects a sense of self-doubt and an inner conflict between wanting and resisting connection. The final assertion of not giving their time implies a fear of investing too deeply or getting hurt.

Overall, "Look Me In the Eye" explores themes of desire, vulnerability, and the complex emotions that arise in relationships.

Wow, Dale's voice is as good as back in the day. This is one of their best songs over all!

BerlinFan82

Was kicking around in 80's Canadian music and happened upon these guys, they are quite good. Another of many artists that make you scratch your head and wonder why they were not bigger.

Man! I never even knew this song existed! I was a huge Images in Vogue fan back in 1984! Just loved these guys, Especially Glen, Dale and Joe! I'm from T.O. but have been living in Japan for the last 16 yrs, and in America for about 5yrs before that so I have lost touch with the music scene in Canada. Lot's of bands I loved when I was young getting back together, Images, Blue Peter, etc.... Anyone know if they are still together??

Artoffact Records announces the first in a series of Images in Vogue reissues!

Images in Vogue was a Vancouver-based new wave group formed in 1981 and released several singles and EPs before signing with Warner for their debut full-length In the House. The band achieved national and international success with their full-bodied take on new wave and synthpop, as well as their wonderful melodies which still get airplay to this day. In 1986, Images in Vogue won a CASBY award for Single of the Year (for "In the House") as well as for group of the year. They produced a second album, The Spell, before disbanding in 1991.

This 4LP vinyl boxset collects some of Images in Vogue's earliest recordings, and represents the group's initial, possibly most famous line-up of Dale Martindale, Joe Vizvary, Glen Nelson, Gary Smith, Kevin Crompton (Cevin Key of Skinny Puppy), and Don Gordon (of Numb). The set includes the band's long-lost first unreleased album; unreleased demos; the band first, now rare EPs; the self-titled Images in Vogue EP, including b-sides and rarities; and a wonderful live performance in 1982 at Vancouver's famous Luv-A-Fair club.
