Amsterdam
Imagine Dragons Lyrics

I'm sorry, mother I'm sorry, I let you down
Well, these days I'm fine
No these days I tend to lie
I'll take the West train, just by the side of Amsterdam
Just by my left brain, just by the side of the Tin man

I'm sorry, brother I'm sorry, I let cha down
Well, these days you're fine
No these days you tend to lie
You'll take the West train, just by the side of Amsterdam
Just by your left brain, just by the side of the Tin man

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried
But I keep coming up short

I'm sorry, lover You're sorry, I bring you down
Well, these days I try and these days I tend to lie
Kinda thought I was a mystery and then I thought I wasn't meant to be
You said yourself fantastically, "Congratulations you were all alone"

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried
Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried

But the rain won't fall for the both of us
The sun won't shine on the both of us
Believe me when I say, that I wouldn't have it any other way

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried
But I won't wait much longer 'cause these walls they're crashing down

And I won't wait much longer 'cause these walls they're crashing down
And I keep coming up short

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Imagine Dragons' song Amsterdam are a reflection of the singer's struggles with life and relationships. The first stanza expresses the singer's remorse for disappointing his mother and brother, and how he tends to lie and hide the truth. He takes the West train to Amsterdam, where he feels that he is close to the Tin man and his left brain, indicating that he wants to escape from his emotional side and focus on logic and reason. In the second stanza, the singer apologizes to his lover and admits to trying and lying, he also finds it difficult to understand his own identity and the fact that he may have been better off alone. The chorus talks about waiting for the right moment in life, which is often elusive and difficult to find. Despite trying hard, the singer finds himself coming up short, indicating his frustration with not being able to move forward in his life.

The bridge of the song talks about how the singer and his lover are going through different issues in their lives, and that the rain won't fall and the sun won't shine on them both. The singer expresses his love and acceptance of this difference and wants to stay true to himself, even if it might mean that he has to face the consequences of his actions. The final chorus talks about his determination to break free from his limitations and move forward in his life. Despite struggling and coming up short a number of times, the singer is optimistic about his future and is willing to fight for it.

CONTEXTO:

I have struggled with mental health for years. Throughout this struggle, however, Imagine Dragons has always been a constant in my happiest memories to my deepest pitfalls. This music gave me the sensation that regardless of the pain I was enduring at that moment, I could always see into my future and picture the man I wanted to become. The passion that awakened inside of me while listening to this music, gave me a reason to push on and never let go of the tangibility of a better life.

I'm 17 now, and for the most part, I've left the darkness behind and set off to build a life that I can be proud of. There have been some obstacles in the way, and I am far from perfect, but I'm progressing and that's all that matters. The fact that this band has recognized and accepted their imperfections, gave me a model that I could look up to and strive to emulate.

I know that this sentiment is shared amongst your fans, and it most certainly shows in the amount of people you've touched with your music. I may be another commenter in the millions, and it's easy to lose sight of the people behind the masses of comments, but we all have a story, and we all have been emotionally impacted by the wonderful people you are and the wonderful music that you brought to this world. For that I am forever grateful.

I have like a mantra when I'm having bad days/weeks, and it is listening to "the light - disturbed" hope it can help a little bit in any way, and sorry if my english is bad🫒

This is the best comment I have ever read

@Milla s Thank you so much, and please, your English is actually really good. I checked out the song and I really liked the message behind it. Just goes to show that music is so much more than auditory input. In return, I recommend any of the songs by Of Monsters and Men. Their style is different than that of the song you recommended to me, but I find they always create heartfelt, passionate music and ultimately that's all I can ask for. My personal favourite is "Hunger."
