Under a joyful and upbeat facade, the song speaks of the hardships and struggles one has faced since his or her early days. It reminisces over the thought that they are never enough for anyone and won’t amount to anything. Subtle references of suicide and depression are found throughout the entirety of the song.
While the song first mysteriously surfaced as a Spotify ad days before its release, “Zero” officially premiered as Zane Lowe’s World Record on 19 September, 2018.

Find a little bit of steady as I get close
Find a balance in the middle of the chaos
Send me low, send me high, send me never demigod
I remember walking in the cold of November
Hoping that I make it to the end of December
Twenty-seven years and the end of my mind, but
Holding to the thought of another time, but
Looking for the path of the young and lonely
I don't want to hear about what to do
I don't want to do it just to do it for you
Hello, hello
Let me tell you what it's like to be a zero, zero
Let me show you what it's like to always feel, feel
Like I'm empty and there's nothing really real, real
I'm looking for a way out
Hello, hello
Let me tell you what it's like to be a zero, zero
Let me show you what it's like to never feel, feel
Like I'm good enough for anything that's real, real
I'm looking for a way out
I find it hard to tell you how I want to run away
I understand it always makes you feel a certain way
I find a balance in the middle of the chaos
Send me up, send me down, semi never demigod
I remember walking in the heat of the summer
Wide-eyed one with a mind full of wonder
Twenty-seven years and I've nothing to show
Falling from the doves to the dark of the crow
Looking to the ways of the ones before me
Looking for the path of the young and lonely
I don't want to hear about what to do, no
I don't want to do it just to do it for you
Hello, hello
Let me tell you what it's like to be a zero, zero
Let me show you what it's like to always feel, feel
Like I'm empty and there's nothing really real, real
I'm looking for a way out
Hello, hello
Let me tell you what it's like to be a zero, zero
Let me show you what it's like to never feel, feel
Like I'm good enough for anything that's real, real
I'm looking for a way out
Let me tell you 'bout it
Well let me tell you 'bout it
Maybe you're the same as me
Let me tell you 'bout it
Well let me tell you 'bout it
They say the truth will set you free
Hello, hello
Let me tell you what it's like to be a zero, zero
Let me show you what it's like to always feel, feel

In "Zero," Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds sings about feeling like a "zero" or a nobody. He struggles to express his emotions and finds it hard to communicate what he wants to say. He searches for balance amidst the chaos of life and is looking for a way out of feeling empty and inadequate. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is lost and trying to find his way, looking to the past for guidance, but also trying to forge his own path. The line "looking for the path of the young and lonely" speaks to the idea of trying to figure out one's place in the world. Ultimately, the song is a plea for understanding and connection.
One interpretation of the lyrics is that they reflect the struggles that come with success and fame. Reynolds has spoken openly about his battles with depression and anxiety, and "Zero" could be seen as a reflection of those struggles. The pressure to maintain a public persona, the isolation that comes with fame, and the fear of not measuring up to expectations can all contribute to feelings of emptiness and worthlessness.

Wow.
What a hidden gem.
I didnt really care for the movie, but this song means SO much to me on a personal level.
There are a lot of songs out there about pure happiness, like being with the one you love. On the other side of it, you got songs about depression and loneliness.
But life ISNT always just either saddening or joyous, theres a melancholic middle ground, and this song is IT.
Its about the stage in one's life where theyre not depressed but still feel useless and without fulfillment. You can have some friends and a game that you love to play, but eventually that game will get old and your friends will grow up with you. You want more, but youre so stuck in the same place, afraid to ever advance in life.
Thats what being a zero is like, and this song is so perfect at describing it

Maybe it’s just me but does anyone notice how this song connects more with the first Wreck it Ralph? Ralph was looking for a way out of his game and was a Zero. In Ralph breaks the internet, he leaves vanellope and and wonders when he will be able to do it again with her, connecting to the song by Owl City which was made for the first film!
