Gravity
Imani Coppola Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My sweet tooth cavity shoots
Pain up in my brain bringin' on the rain
Look at the sad sack frown
So I'm puttin' on my gravity boots
cruisin' around town cruisin' around town
lookin' for a place to get down

And I'll get off my high horse
If you can be my ladder
Make sure the ground below is covered with roses
And I'll take my head out of the clouds
If you can take yours out of your ass
And we can celebrate with a night on the town

But you gotta be down
Gotta be down, gotta be down, gotta be down
gotta be down, down, down, gotta be down with me
Gotta be down, gotta be down, gotta be down
gotta be down, down, down, gotta be down with me

I read all the words off a cereal box
My curiosity is my new philosophy
But Trix are for kids
So I went to school a university
But daydream was just about all I did

And I'll get off my high horse
If you get me a ladder
Make sure the ground below is covered with roses
And I'll take my head out of the clouds
If you can take yours out of your ass
And we can celebrate with a night on the town

But you gotta be down

Gotta be down, gotta be down, gotta be down
Gotta be down, down, down, gotta be down with me
Gotta be down, gotta be down, gotta be down
Gotta be down, down, down, gotta be down with me

And I walked the souls right off these shoes
tryin' to beat these nowhere blues
And I'm choosin' everything I lose
And I'm casting shadows over you
Can't always be perfect sunny days
But you had to learn the hard way
You wanna be down with me?
I'll give you some of my gravity

Down! Gotta be...Down!

Overall Meaning

In Imani Coppola's song "Gravity," the lyrics describe the struggle of the singer to deal with the sour feelings brought about by a toothache. She compares it to the pain that people feel in their minds and emphasizes the feeling by saying it brings on the rain. She decides to continue with her day by strapping on her imaginary gravity boots and looking for something to do. The lyrics shift and talk about getting off one's high horse to meet someone in the middle. She offers to take her head out of the clouds if the other person will take their head out of their ass. The singer wants to celebrate with a night on the town but requires the other person to be down with her first.

As the lyrics continue, the singer expresses her curiosity, saying she reads the words off a cereal box and that curiosity is now her philosophy. She went to college, but daydreaming was all she did. The lyric shifts back to the chorus as the singer reflects on the struggles of life, casting shadows over someone, and experiencing down moments. Nevertheless, she requests that the other person be down with her, offering her gravity.

Interestingly, "Gravity" was featured in popular shows and films such as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Sense8. Also, the song's lyrics were sampled in a song by a Canadian rapper, Classified, titled "No Pressure." Coppola originally released the song on her album "The Black and White Album" in 2007. Still, it had a resurgence in popularity thanks to its inclusion in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It's a popular song for fans of indie, pop, and rock music. Coppola was best known for her 1997 hit "Legend of a Cowgirl." Below are the guitar chords to the song.

Chords:
