Formed by Claes Strängberg and his brother Per in 2004, Immanu El was joined by Michael Persson and Emil Karlsson soonafter where they began to work on their first release.
The band name, Immanu El, is a play on words (of sorts) on the Hebrew Bible's prophecy of Immanuel, the prophesied Messiah, and the Semetic word for God, El (deity), and "with us" (Immanu). The band's name takes on even deeper meaning in light of the Judeo-Christian philosophies of Jesus being simultaneously the Jewish Messiah and God in one.
After touring, supporting such bands as Logh and Loney, Dear they got the chance in 2005 to play a set on the 'Rookie Stage' in the Hultsfred Festival; an opportunity for unsigned bands to perform at a major event.
They released their first EP titled Killerwhale, before being signed to And the Sound Records in 2006. The following year, Immanu El recorded and released their first full-length album They'll Come, They Come. Building on the success of their first album they released their second album Moen in 2009, followed by In Passage in 2011.
Lionheart
Immanu El Lyrics

So white and dovelike
Everything's melting around
So sing me your words
I'm trembling of thirst
Truth is triumphant in silence
In late July
As summers fall
I am blinded
All I can feel
I hear your voice
As the wind blows
Waving through trees
And all things are melting around
In late July
Stay, don't leave my side
Strike like thunder
Lightnings high
I am blinded
All I can feel
I hear your vvoice
As the rain falls
Calling on me
And all things are melting around
I'm spellbound
By unconditional love
Unconditional love
Unconditional love
Unconditional love
Oh, Agnus Dei
Blow my heart away
Unconditional love
By unconditional love
The lyrics of Immanu El’s song “Lionheart” are deeply meaningful and poetic, blending images of nature with expressions of intense love and yearning. The opening lines speak of gazing into the eyes of someone, which are described as “white and dovelike.” The imagery suggests a sense of purity and innocence, perhaps even a kind of spiritual purity. The singer is overwhelmed by this experience, and feels as though everything else is melting away. This is a powerful metaphor for the intensity of the emotion they are feeling - all other distractions and concerns have faded away in the face of this intense connection.
The singer then implores the person they are addressing to “sing me your words / I’m trembling of thirst.” This is a deeply visceral description of the desire for connection and communication with another person. The next line - “truth is triumphant in silence” - adds another layer of meaning to this. It suggests that sometimes words are not necessary to communicate deep truths; silence and presence can speak volumes.
Later in the song, the lyrics make use of powerful nature imagery once again, with the lines “As the wind blows / Waving through trees” and “As the rain falls / Calling on me.” These images paint a picture of a person lost in a storm, both literal and emotional. The use of the phrase “spellbound / By unconditional love” suggests a kind of enchantment or entrapment. The singer is captivated by the love they feel, but it is overwhelming and all-consuming.
Overall, the lyrics of “Lionheart” are deeply emotive and poetic, drawing on natural imagery to convey profound feelings of love and longing.
