Voices
Immanu El Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Through the winter night
In my darkest hour
You glow
You glow in the darkness

Both my hands are numb
And my heart is frozen
You burn
You burn like a fire

A thousand voices
A million words
Calling for my heart
You start a fire
You breath your life
Within

I can't bear the weight
I have burned my bridges
So clear
Your words still remind me

Out of the dark
Out of the night
You will keep us warm
Until dawn

A thousand voices
A million words
Calling for my heart
You start a fire

You breath your life
Within

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Immanu El's song "Voices" describe a person going through a difficult and dark time in their life, where they feel numb and frozen inside. However, they find comfort in someone or something that shines through the darkness and warms their heart like a fire. The lyrics suggest that this source of comfort has been reminding the person of something important, even though they have burned their bridges and can no longer bear the weight of their situation. The chorus refers to the many voices and words calling out for the person's heart, but it is the warmth of this comforting source that brings life back into them.

The song's lyrics are open to interpretation but seem to convey a message of hope and restoration. The imagery of a fire burning in the winter night represents a source of light and warmth in the midst of darkness and coldness. The phrase "breath your life within" may suggest the restorative power of love, which has the ability to bring a person back to life. The repetition of "a thousand voices, a million words" could be interpreted as the many distractions and noise of the world, but this comforting source cuts through the noise and speaks truth to the person's heart.

My English teacher, Mr. Sanders, showed us this video in class because it related to the book Freak the Mighty and it shows parallels to it.

⚠️[SPOILERS TO ANYONE WHO HASN’T READ IT YET]⚠️

Near the end of the book, Freak dies because he had Morquio syndrome, which is that the internal organs are growing at a normal rate while the outside of the body aren’t. Since Freak was highly intelligent from a young age, he learned about it in a medical dictionary and he knew he wasn’t to live a long life. To cope with the feeling he’s going to die soon, he used science fiction as an escape from it by referencing knights and dragons and Star Trek. His most significant reference was that he was going to receive a bionic body from the hospital, but it’s a “secret” the doctors were keeping. Max (who is an unreliable narrator) thinks that he actually is getting a bionic body. Every time he would ask Freak about the body (because he was in the hospital frequently), Freak would say the research is continuing. What he’s really saying is that his body was getting progressively getting worse. On his final day, he says to Freak that the bionic body is on red alert and what he’s really saying is that he’s going to die. This video shows parallels to the book because it shows a boy who wants to be an astronaut. It’s his dream. But as the video progresses, the video is more clear, less shaky and old, and it shows the boy and girl looking less happy, as if something bad was happening to him. Then the girls helps him with his space adventures and his rocket and at the end, it blasts off into space. This could be a metaphor that he died and he did by imagining as an astronaut, which is the same (technically) case for Freak. He used getting a new bionic body as a metaphor for death.

It's actually so insulting to me that this song and you as a band are so underrated, for this incredible music video alone and the song to have only 72k views is disgusting! Shame on the world that haven't given appreciation to this masterpiece!

As much as it feels wrong that this beautiful song doesn't have the recognition it deserves. I find solace in the obscurity of such beauty .. in the sense that belongs to the very few selected ones.
