Their friendship dates back to primary school, when for Jose Enrique and Roman there were only two things worth the bother: playing soccer and learning music. As long as they could listen to The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Byrds, the world could break apart for all they cared.
Very quickly, they realized what the other was good at: Jose Enrique could easily learn the lyrics of songs they liked, knew about harmony, and sang well; Roman had already developed good guitar skills and was able to memorize songs after one listening. When they were 14, Orfeon (then a major record label in Mexico) offered them a recording contract, which they turned down.
The hippie era vanished, punk rock arrived, and Roman and Jose Enrique carried on making songs as usual, many of which survive to this day. A couple of years ago, they decided to blow the dust off some of them to see if they had endured the passage of time.
They have. The result of all those years of making music just for the sake of it is a beautiful indie folk CD called By Fits and Starts, an album made without concessions or conditions, with great care and the same attitude Jose Enrique and Roman had grown up with. This CD, recorded over a two-year period, using free timeslots generously provided by Estudio 19 in Mexico City, is a disarming mix of cheekiness and innocence, proof that it is never too late to fulfill your dreams. Get All Your Troubles, the first single, is a sweet, pop-minded song reminiscent of Eliot Smith or The High Lamas in that it quickly enfolds you with a smooth melody. The beauty of songs like Third Floor, Twas Only Me, and In the Early Hours will easily captivate you.

Third floor
Improbable people Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm living on the third floor of my house
Even though it's only made of two
Three windows look around at all the clouds
Rooms in white that someone put in there
Try to come upstairs,
Dare to come upstairs
See the place that I can call my own
I'm playing on a piano of my own
Painted with a flower that was grey
A sofa that a friend once gave to me
Pictures of someone I used to know
Try to come upstairs,
Come and see the place where I belong
Dare to come upstairs
See the place that now I call my own
Spacemen down from heaven come and go
Getting through the closet of my room
Leaving all their spaceships in a cloud
Talking in a language that I know
Try to come upstairs,
Come and see the place where I belong
Dare to come upstairs
See the place that now I call my home
The song "Third Floor" by Improbable People explores the idea of a personal space that is both unique and intimate. The lyrics begin by talking about the third floor of the singer's house, which is made up of only two floors. The three windows on the third floor provide a panoramic view of the clouds, while the white rooms inside are adorned with personal touches that make it their own.
The singer takes pride in their living space and invites others to come upstairs to see it. This sense of ownership and belonging is reflected in the next verse, which describes a piano painted with a flower that was once grey. A sofa given by a friend and pictures of someone they used to know are also amongst the belongings that make this space personal.
The final verse connects this personal space to the universe beyond, as spacemen from heaven come and go through the singer's room, leaving their spaceships in a cloud. The language they speak is one that the singer knows, suggesting a connection beyond conventional communication.
Overall, "Third Floor" speaks to the human desire for a space that is uniquely their own, where they can be surrounded by their personal belongings and find a sense of belonging, no matter what may be happening in the world around them.
