Intermission
In/Humanity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somehow happy to stay
Where there's unwanted
Emotional boundary state
Hardships applauded
Ignorant simple advice free but misled me
I can see you built up a wall assure I wasn't there

You've got some exceptional force field of emotion
And concrete value on your pleasure
Breathe your hesitations of breath don't let'em linger
Oxidated visions fester
La la la la

Intermission test to unglue
Gotta get back or I'm screwed
Time limits take away from me willinghness to go
Maybe I'll just drink one beer
Casting down complaints of fear

Broken bones I've had in years
Bringing me some pain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to In/Humanity's song Intermission seem to be about the struggle of dealing with emotional boundaries and hardships. The opening line "Somehow happy to stay where there's unwanted" suggests that the singer may be content in a situation that is not ideal or comfortable for them. The following line "Emotional boundary state, hardships applauded" reinforces this idea that the singer may be in a situation where their emotions are not being respected, and also that others may be applauding their struggles as a sort of sick validation.

The next few lines suggest that the singer has received some advice that was free but misleading - "ignorant simple advice free but misled me". It's possible that the singer is feeling betrayed by someone they trusted, or that they're frustrated by the fact that others may be giving advice without fully understanding their situation. The line "I can see you built up a wall assure I wasn't there" suggests that someone may be actively ignoring the singer or shutting them out.

The rest of the song seems to be a call to action - the singer urges themselves to "unglue" during the intermission, to not let their "oxidated visions fester", and to cast down "complaints of fear" and "broken bones" that are holding them back. The chorus "La la la la" may be read as an almost sarcastic dismissal of their own struggles or a refusal to let them define or defeat them. Overall, the song seems to be about reclaiming agency and freeing oneself from emotional boundaries and hardships that are preventing them from moving forward.

Hello! I'm honored to make it here again.
It's actually my birthday today. Wow, what a gift!!

The original version of this song(0:00 ~ 2:08) was initially composed over the Summer of 2019, and was submitted to that year's "BMS of Fighters". "the intermission" is an extension of "humanity" made for GroundbreakinG BOFXV, submitted sometime in February or March 2020 -- few weeks before I sold my instruments away.

When I made this extension, I had effectively given up on my life as it used to be, and was making preparations for a graceful shutdown of operations, both as a rhythm-game composer and as a sane human being.

I was expected to start serving in the military from March 23rd, 2020.
I wasn't expecting to die die, but instead was expecting to lose functionality of one or more body parts over the following year - including an ear. That would have been more than enough to break me. Earlier that year my doctor had instructed me to stop using earphones or headphones, as my ears had apparently reached a point where continued usage of such devices could cause permanently impair my ability to hear. Combine that with how members of our military forces have reputations for having no concern for the well-being nor the basic human rights of soldiers, and the fact that soldiers are supposed to handle firearms. Plus, I knew that I am in no way sociable enough to avoid social seclusion, which would then be followed by acts of cruelty by fellow soldiers.

Fortunately I was lucky enough to work with a bunch of gentlemen who knew much better than to spit on their surroundings, but it was a quite shitty experience nonetheless. (If you would like to know what serving in the military felt like, please try https://soundcloud.com/thanks_a_plenty/downfallandaftermath in a large enough volume, large enough so that you can disregard how unwell the pianos sound.)

Anyways, 2:37 to 3:50 was my way of expressing a hope that I would one day return unscathed - hence the name "intermission". I can hear quite a few strange voicings here and there, but I am still quite proud of that one part from 2:37 to 3:05.

Yes, this song isn't exactly perfect either, but I hope you could enjoy!

I can't presume to understand what you've gone through. Perhaps I'm lucky that I never will. But thank you for making this. I hope that you will have the chance to make more music and have your music reach more games and ears.

As a headphones user, I could have done without the death by emergency alert sound.
