During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.
Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.
Behind Space *
In Flames Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Breeding fear through wordless tongue
Heavenly thirst - unspeakable pain
Emptied from all human motion
Confront the faceless wrath
Beckoning silent from a sphere behind space
Through twisted ruins of uncompleted dreams
Clawing at the skies - they gonna pull it down
Intensity - I feel the lava rushing through my veins
Stars are reforming - to enter the fourth dimension
Beyond all galaxies
Through timeless eons of frost
Unearthly hunger - angels descent
We are entering dimensions behind space...
Beyond all galaxies
Through timeless eons of frost
In Flames's "Behind Space" seems to describe a journey through the cosmos that is both awe-inspiring and frightening. The first few lines suggest that the singer is no longer bound by human limitations, as they are referred to by their "astral name" and have been "emptied from all human motion." They are now able to "confront the faceless wrath" and communicate without words, but it is unclear whether this power is ultimately liberating or terrifying. The imagery that follows is full of contradictions and contrasts: the singer is drawn by a "heavenly thirst" but also experiences "unspeakable pain"; they travel through "twisted ruins" and "sights of towers reaching for the moon," both of which suggest decay and instability; and they feel intensity and vitality in their "lava rushing veins," but also see stars "reforming" and entering the "fourth dimension," which implies a radical transformation or destruction of the known world.
As the song progresses, the singer seems to be journeying further into the unknown, leaving all earthly and human experience behind. They reference "unearthly hunger" and "angels descent," suggesting that they are encountering beings or forces that are unlike anything they have ever known. The repeated phrase "Beyond all galaxies / Through timeless eons of frost" suggests that the singer is continuing to push past all known boundaries of space and time, to confront something that is both ancient and completely foreign to them. Ultimately, the song ends with the fear and uncertainty still intact - "We are entering dimensions behind space" - suggesting that the singer's journey is far from complete, and that the final destination may be beyond comprehension or even survival.
