During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.
Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.
Everlost
In Flames Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My tearful windows
Through which no emotions pass
Starvation of senses claws my soul
Answer me
Are these walls my only shelter
From the bleeding atmosphere
"I deliver thee from this agony
A storm to cleanse thee"
Mine is the right to be
Maelstrom of the everlost
This is the curse of ...
All is dark
All but one aspect of life
To be shackled
In a shell, so misleading
"These are the shells bestowed upon me"
Pass into the darkened of the midnight
Sounds, faceless lights
Hands tear apart
Dissolve possess
You alone can take my soul
Take flight
In Flames’s song Everlost Pt. I is a dark and emotional song that discusses the feelings of loneliness and despair. The first stanza states that the lights are dim and the windows are tearful. The tears show that no emotions can pass through and thus the singer is feeling quite empty. The starvation of senses that claws my soul refers to how the person feels experiencing a lack of emotions. The singer then asks if the walls are their only shelter from the bleeding atmosphere, which could mean that they feel suffocated by the heavy and negative emotions around them.
The chorus uses a metaphor to explain how the singer feels about themselves. They say that they are the Maelstrom of the everlost. A maelstrom is a powerful whirlpool and in using this word in the context of the everlost, which could mean those who are lost or forgotten, the singer is saying that they are someone who is struggling with powerful and negative emotions that are often associated with feeling lost or forgotten. The phrase "this is the curse of" is left hanging which can give different interpretations to the listener.
The second verse describes how everything in life is dark except for one aspect, which is to be shackled in a shell that is misleading. The singer points out that these shells have been bestowed upon them and then passes into the darkness of the night. The sounds and faceless lights refer to a state where nothing is quite real, and reality itself is confusing. The final lines of the song suggest the singer is now ready to accept their fate and they ask whoever is listening to take their soul and set them free. Overall, the song is about loneliness, despair, and a feeling of being lost in the world.
