During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.
Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.

In Flames Lyrics

We are creatures
We leave her as we trust
If you say this way
I will take that way
'Til for the fire will it die
Fry
Spit me out
I'm glad I don't belong
Save me the speech
You'll be forgotten and gone
It burns
It rips
It hurts
Leeches
They preach to us
Where's the wisdom from the crowd
Spit me out
I'm glad I don't belong
Save me the speech
You'll be forgotten and gone
It burns
It rips
It hurts
They made you believe
Your turn
The chance of a lifetime
How does it feel to be alive
Let's hear it for the bullet
That can't be heard
Pray to yours that I steal
Spit me out
I'm glad I don't belong
Save me the speech
You'll be forgotten and gone
It burns
It rips
It hurts
They made you believe
Your turn (It hurts)
The chance of a lifetime
How does it feel to be alive
The lyrics to In Flames's song "Leeches" seem to describe the feeling of being part of a group or society where everyone is expected to follow the crowd without questioning a thing. The singer of the song identifies the individuals as creatures who leave her, signifying that they are not always trustworthy. The first verse suggests some form of power struggle between the singer and the members of the group. The singer is open to taking the direction that the group suggests, but only up to a certain point, till they feel the fire dies. The use of the word "fry" at the end of the verse could indicate the society's destructive nature towards its members.
The chorus "Spit me out, I'm glad I don't belong, save me the speech, you'll be forgotten and gone" reiterates the singer's vexation with the society and the constant pressure that they apply to conform. The use of words such as "Burns, rips and hurts," portray how painful it is to exist in such an environment. In the second verse, the song shifts into a critical tone focusing on how "they" preach to us. The phrase "they" could represent those in power or those leading the group. They continue to offer speeches that lack wisdom critical to leading a society. The bridge of the song could be a point of contrast, posing what feels like a glimmer of hope. It speaks of the chance of a lifetime and asks how it feels to be alive. Nevertheless, the verses' melancholic tone overshadows this glimmer of hope, suggesting the chance of a lifetime could be nothing but an illusion.
