During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.
Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.
Scorn
In Flames Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As my mouth remains still
My heart awaits me. filled with gravel
As the pain grows with each touch
Since I marked her out from my tower
Reality focused through forbidden lenses
She owns enough of preciousness
But I still have no choice through
The hinderens freighten
A labyrinth closing at the edge of space
But they never allow
She's shut...for all beings but one
I give, I scorn, I threat
The lyrics to In Flames's song "Scorn" focus on themes of isolation, suffering, and unrequited love. The first two lines suggest a sense of hopelessness, as the singer laments their impending death and the fact that no one will know or care about it. The third line, "My heart awaits me, filled with gravel," speaks to the singer's inner turmoil and pain. The use of the word "gravel" suggests a sense of heaviness or burden weighing on the singer's heart.
The next lines center on a woman who has captivated the singer's attention. He "marked her out from [his] tower," suggesting a power dynamic in which the singer is elevated above the woman. His perception of her is distorted by "forbidden lenses," which could refer to his own biases, cultural norms that prohibit relationships between them, or other factors. Despite this, the woman possesses a preciousness and value that he cannot ignore. However, there is a penalty for desiring her, which seems to come from an external source.
The final lines suggest a complex mixture of emotions towards the woman: "I give, I scorn, I threat." The singer may be torn between loving and hating her, or between wanting to be with her and knowing that it would be impossible. The use of the word "threat" suggests a sense of danger or violence, which may be directed towards the woman or towards himself.
Overall, In Flames's "Scorn" is a dark and introspective song that explores complex emotions and relationships. The lyrics offer a glimpse into the singer's inner turmoil and pain, as well as his longing for love and acceptance.
