The truth
In Flames Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are, we are, we are
We are, we are, we are

The time has come to bring you down
Take the power back I'll show you how
I hear the sound of a plane passing by
Someone had the same thoughts as I
But as I get to the end of mine
You deny and think everything is fine

We are, we are, we are
We are the truth that hurts the most 'cause
We are, we are, we are
It hurts when your denial's exposed
It hurts when your denial's exposed

Why can't we see eye to eye?
Think of all the things we leave behind
I hear the sound of a car driving by
You can go on for miles
But you will run out, this is not your day
Are you just gonna turn around and walk away?

We are, we are, we are
We are the truth that hurts the most 'cause
We are, we are, we are
It hurts when your denial's exposed
It hurts when your denial's exposed

But as I get to the end of mine
You deny and think everything is fine

We are, we are, we are
We are the truth that hurts the most 'cause
We are, we are, we are
It hurts when your denial's exposed
We are, we are, we are

It hurts when your denial's exposed
It hurts when your denial's exposed

Overall Meaning

In Flames's "The Truth" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that explores the idea of denial and the consequences of ignoring reality. The song starts with an ominous repetition of "We are" before launching into a call to action: "The time has come to bring you down / Take the power back I'll show you how." The lyrics suggest a desire to confront someone who is in denial about something important, perhaps a societal issue or a personal problem.

The second half of the first verse introduces a hint of doubt, as the singer hears the sound of a plane passing overhead and realizes that "someone had the same thoughts as I." This may be a reference to the idea that many people are aware of the problem at hand, but are either too afraid or too invested in the status quo to speak up. The chorus then drives home the central message of the song: "We are the truth that hurts the most / It hurts when your denial's exposed."

The second verse continues to explore the theme of denial, with the singer asking, "Why can't we see eye to eye? / Think of all the things we leave behind." This could be a plea to the person in denial to consider the long-term consequences of their actions or beliefs. The final lines of the song return to the idea that many people refuse to acknowledge the truth, even when it is staring them in the face: "But as I get to the end of mine / You deny and think everything is fine."

Overall, "The Truth" is a potent and emotionally charged song that asks listeners to consider the importance of facing reality and speaking up against unjust or harmful systems.

Me too! Oldschool In Flames fans are kinda disappointed about their newer stuff. Battles and I, The Mask are amazing albums for me!

Whether or not the video makes sense with the song, You have to admire how much thought and effort was actually put into the video.

@UntEyEHero

Quite honestly, I like this song and have great respect and love for both the old and new In Flames. I grew up listening to In Flames as a 90's kid and somehow their evolution just hasn't bothered me. I think it has to do with a person's perspective and none is going to have the same. We shouldn't rip on each other for our difference in opinions. Rather should accept the fact and move on.
