During the band's early years, In Flames had a varying group of musicians recording with them, including many session musicians. By the release of Colony (1999), the group had established a stable lineup. Their sixth studio album Reroute to Remain (2002) showed the band moving toward a newer style of music that moved further away from melodic death metal and closer to alternative metal. This decision was criticized by fans of the group's heavier metal sound; however, it increased the band's mainstream audience and bolstered their album sales. As of 2008, In Flames has sold over two million records worldwide.
Since the band's inception, In Flames have released thirteen studio albums, three EPs, and two live DVDs, their latest release being their thirteenth studio album I, the Mask in 2019. In Flames has been nominated for three Grammis Awards. They won two of these nominations; one for Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004) in the "Hard Rock/Metal of the Year" category, and one nomination for their following album Come Clarity (2006) in the same category.
Tilt
In Flames Lyrics

In honor of the good cause
How empty we've become
With our sight to be the true force
Does every instinct say you're right?
I think sometimes there is doubt.
You're waiting for a re-run,
But yesterday won't come.
Want to relive the moment,
But yesterday is done.
Lies and desperation lead us through as we're trying to be heroic,
I swept the world to watch you manage.
Take a step back,
I'll tie you to it.
[Chorus]
Hopes and prayers in pursuit of salvation,
Take a short cut, it only bends our cause.
But as far as I remember,
There is nothing that will get back the days you lost.
Does every instinct say you're right?
I think sometimes there is doubt.
{Chorus]
The lyrics to "Tilt" by In Flames delve into the concept of nostalgia and the tendency of humans to glorify the past, wishing to relive it instead of moving forward. The opening lines suggest a collective connection in humanity, united in the desire to do something good, but ultimately feeling hollow and unfulfilled. The following lines highlight a struggle with doubt, as every instinct may not always lead to the right path.
The chorus emphasizes the futility of trying to relive the past, as yesterday is gone and cannot be repeated. The lyrics also acknowledge the danger of lies and desperation, which can lead us to make misguided attempts at heroism. The verse "Take a step back, I'll tie you to it." refers to taking a moment to analyze and understand one's actions and possible consequences.
The second chorus emphasizes the theme of time being irretrievable, and the consequences of taking shortcuts in the pursuit of a goal. The line "There is nothing that will get back the days you lost" reinforces the idea of regret for the past, fruitlessly trying to recapture something that has already passed.
Overall, "Tilt" conveys a poignant message about the danger of becoming too fixated on the past and the importance of confronting doubt and mistakes instead of longing for what cannot be regained.
