@Jen R My neighbors cats aren't ever inside even in winter(and the field across the street is the coyote hunting grounds) so I built a shelter on my back porch. It cost around $300.00. its a 4'x4'x3' plywood box set on wire metal shelves(wired so as to allow airflow). A piece of plywood for a floor then with foam padding and and blankets for cushion.(the other reason its on shelving is that when it rains the metal shelving keeps the plywood floor and foam from getting wet.) There are two cat beds(purchased from walmart) and the walls have an inside wall and outside wall with insulation between them. I covered the entire shelter with shower curtains on the outside for waterproofing. There is a small hole drilled out where a light has been pushed through the wall and a small shelf where a tiny heater is placed allowing me to turn on the heater when it starts getting colder. Also the light bulb will be replaced with a heat lamp bulb in winter. This shelter is placed on my back porch and I feed the cats two or three times a day and check on them twice a night because I always worry that a coyote will come across the road into our yard to try to get at the cats. I say all this to say that people do not think when they get pets. They assume a lot and most of it is wrong. My neighbors are not cruel people and they do love their cats but they have two large dogs that live in the house so the cats get bumped outside. Please think very carefully before you get a pet. Think about its safety its comfort and its upkeep, and plan accordingly.

It had to have been pure anguish for that lady, ,and of course the dog. It's gnawing at my guts just thinking of that poor dog being chained up for at least a year (that we know of). That chain was so short. That's torture for a dog. No stimulation, next to no exercise, not well fed, total boredom and living in the elements constantly all alone. Dogs have been known to go crazy subjected to that. They are so social, thriving on packs and/or human contact. They can become deeply depressed and fearful spending that much time alone, or go feral. It would be like keeping a man in a cell for that long. That lady must have kept that poor dog sane.

Thanks to Animal Control's initial blunder, there was another full year wasted out of this dog's life. When You think about the short lifespan of a dog around this size, that extra year chained was beyond heartbreaking.

To everyone here saying it's OK to keep a dog chained alone outside "as long as it has food, water and shelter?" Please don't get a dog. The dog doesn't want an owner like you - and be honest, you don't really want a dog; you want an alarm system. Which is good news as it's cheaper. A few exceptions - some dogs guard sheep - but even they aren't chained outside; they roam freely and consider the sheep their family.

@Inter Yanan while many dogs do like to be alone I have owned multiple akitas and they are not the social dogs, but you still shouldn't chain a dog up all day and night for days becuase even solo dogs nead to get exersice and in the video the lady said the previous owner wasn't properly feeding the dog

Akita's have the sweetest nature. We rescued our boy Boz from a very similar situation, and he gave us so much love and was such a joy to have around. He passed away several years ago and I still miss my Bozzy bear. Seeing an Akita always tugs at my heart.

The woman took any free time she had and spent it on this dog for a year, maybe before calling her out for not just stealing the dog, think this, maybe she didn’t steal the dog becuase she would get caught and wouldn’t be able to save the dog, so just because you may have more free time, don’t think your better then others just becuase they can’t drop everything, she saved the dog and that’s what matters.

I think the owner's purpose was to have it as a guard dog, most rural areas in the States and Asian countries keep pets outside. Although not chained up cause you'd want the dog to guard your whole house, not one corner of it. But honestly, a Ring camera and ADT alarm system would be cheaper than a dog and more effective.

@Omari De leon no, I have met alot of cats and I mean A LOT. Their r a range of personalities. From over excited and friendly to nervous and shy. I think people see cats how they want to. If u r told all ur life cats are snooty and standoffish that's how u view them. But if u r told ur whole life cats r free and dont like to be pet or bothered all the time then u view them differently. I dont think cats are snooty. people try to push human personalities onto animals it's just what we do. But if u take cats reactions at face value I think you will see a different side to them. For example dogs r a packed animal they run with other dogs so they just by nature want to be around people more. Cats are solitary-ish animals although they sometimes form communities they are like children although they love you they need there space to do there own thing. They show affection by sleeping with you bringing you food and hanging with you even if they dont want to be pet. My grandma has a cat that will follow her around every where she goes and is very protective of her but does not like to be pet and have all of the attention in the room. when people come over the cat sits with everyone like she is part of the conversation lol. But I've met a lot of cats that show their affection by snuggling and wanting pets and attention. So they show affection differently and u have to gain the trust of a cat more slowly then a dog. Just thought I should share lol

I think the original owner wanted to have it as a guard dog. I've seen many rural areas in the world where dogs sleep happily outside and would prefer to be outside if they're being fed, they are still animals that can eat, sleep, and poop outside. However, the tying up part is stupid, wouldn't you want the guard dog to patrol the whole premise of the property rather than guarding just one spot?

Out of all the dog rescue videos I've watched over the years, this by far is my all-time favourite. The way she wiggles her head trying to get closer to Laura each time she stops by to care for her future girlfriend fills me with such joy and gladness. I stop by this video every few days just to remind myself during this difficult time that there is still good in the world. It keeps me smiling knowing this love bug has three hots and a cot, and all the love she could ever want! I wish I could tell Linda thank you for sharing this with all of us.

I knew a dog tied to a tree for 11 years, since it was a puppy. I saw that dog every day as I was its neighbor. This was in Tennessee. Lots of dogs there were tied to trees, sheds, garages, boats, bricks, etc - you name it. Police and animal control told me the same thing this woman heard. Very sad, indeed. That Tennessee dog has passed on but I say hello to her when I look up to the sky and wish her health, happiness and a wonderful, loving home where ever she is now.

Little act of kindness love and concern brings my heart joy. Touched my heart even more the fact that this lady stumbled across a full grown American Akita that was sweet as could be. After all of this woman's love, time, concern, & efforts she was eventually rewarded with the dog in the end. I went through the same thing years ago . "Law enforcement" checked out the dog chained to a stake in the ground next to a rotten wood "dog house" and said it had "shelter" . That dog mysteriously disappeared one night . It's doing great .

Really! Totally agree. I Have chained a dog - but strictly short term and not to a tree in the elements. I got a shelter dog years ago after my last dog passed at 15+ yrs. from cancer, who kept escaping. So I chained the new doggie for a little while when I wasn't home. Before you yell, she Climbed an 8 Foot fence! She wasn't a big dog. Found out asap Why you leave the leash on the new dog after you bring 'em home. It 's so you can catch them when they run! I couldn't stay home all the time, and wasn't going to give up on her the first week, and return her. It was too hot to lock her in the garage other then the early AM & she was NOT house trained, yet. So, I had her on a 30 ft cable across most of the back yard, with a 25 foot chain, 3 double swivels to keep the chain un-kinked as much as possible with half the shed as her dog house. Until she finally realized she Was home and safe. She had 2 dishes and 2 horse buckets of water & was fed twice a day plus treats - too skinny at first. She had toys and chews and seemed happy. This was for when I wasn't home, and couldn't take her with me. The shelter warned me, who-ever she ran away from ( before I adopted her ) , abused her. I tossed her a dog treat, the 2nd day. Instead of catching it like other dogs who I had, previously, or sniffing it after the treat landed on the ground, she ran and Hid. This was After calling her and saying "Here's a treat". So from then on, her treats were handed to her. But, this was a temp. solution until the poor girl figured out she had landed in a family that would treat her right & she stopped trying to climb the fence. Chaining her wasn't a good thing, but getting run over could have killed her.

this tears me up. I remember I got friends with my neighbor's dog,( they pretty much let him out and mostly forgot to him food and attention) I got attached and started calling him "Puppy-kun" lmao, everytime im off from school he will dash like DASSHHH to me so cutely(he even whines uwu) we will play for a minute before the sun is down, I'll get inside my house hearing him whine the playtime's over ;^; it always gets me so I will throw some treats for him (he does that to my family hahaha they come to love him). and when dinner's ready I would ask my mom to help me prepare food (tbh I was shocked my other neighbors are worried about the dog too, and tried to feed him but he only trust my family and eats our food ;_; so precious)omg I missed him, he moved out with his human parents ;_; to province (i really cried when I was playing with him the night before) and before they go puppy-kun cries really hard ;-; it's heartbreaking.. I missed the smol bean💕I hope he's treated right, he's a wonderful dog.

@Scorched Earth I've had a number of treeing dogs, and they do not require any training to dig borrows, they exhibit that behaviour innately. And every article that had been posted about this is a damn near copy and paste, includes only one side of the story and all pictures of the home and yard THEY ARE FREE OF TRASH, LITTER OR FECES, that indicates a constant care level far above what she described, lastly they were very careful to not include any form of testimony of the original owner which screams fuckery on their parts. I've known quite a few people that care deeply for their animals take good care of them feed them, take them to the vet when needed, make sure that animal is happy and still end up powerless when people like this lady set their sights on that animal declaring arbitrarily "That's my dog now."
