though i agree a deeper ocean would result in a higher pressure, i think you forgot to account for the reduced gravity. earth's gravigy is about 9.8 m/s squared, whereas europa has about 1.3 m/s squared. so this would mean 100 km depth on europa corresponds with about 13 km depth on earth. granted it's very deep, but an unmanned vehicle can reach those depths far easier than a manned ship.

Don't forget, for the submarine you'll also have to counter part the fact of how long video footage will take to get to Earth. So the submarine can not be controlled from earth and maybe the submarine may have a guidance system and sonar to avoid crashing into any lager rock parts in the oceans

With a lower gravitational force the pressure wouldn't be as great as you think it would be. With less gravitational force the water above you is being pulled towards the core with less strength and therefore doesn't assert so much pressure onto you. However 100km is still a significant distance so yeah, it'll be high pressure. Just not as much as you think.. Apart from this one error great video! :D

I suspect many of the solar system's moons have subterranean oceans which could harbour life. I am surprised Callisto has not much interest as it is beyond the radiation belt of Jupiter (easier to visit) yet experiences sufficient tidal forces to maintain an ocean.

Did you account for the lower gravity when figuring pressure on Europas ocean floor? The ocean is much deeper but the moon has much less gravity. I've read from other sources that it is not even beyond the capabilities of current submarine technology.

Many of our space probes are nuclear powered. The autonomous submarine vehicle we send to Europa could be nuclear powered as well, like our military submarines on Earth.

The pressure at the the bottom of Europa's ocean may not be much greater than the bottom of Earth's ocean because the planet has much less mass, meaning much less gravity. However, the more unknown variable is the temperature at the bottom of Europa's ocean. Look at a solid/liquid/gas phase diagram for water to see the relationship with pressure and temperature. Ice is likely the most common state of water in the solar system.

Europa's ocean needs to be in contact with a rocky bottom if we are assuming there is at least simple cellular life like Earth. We just need to send probes and learn more! :)

What about sending the probe down through one of the plume holes that the planet opens up on its own? Also, Europas gravity is something of 1/9th of earth. So it seems like pressure wouldn't be that big of an issue until you venture real deep.

Great video. however due to what you said about how hard it is for a sub marine to survive in the ocean on Europa, I was wondering if the water pressure will still be that critical since the gravity on Europa is only 1/7 of which is on earth. One must remember that the gravity on Europa is much weaker than here on Earth, so the pressure would not be calculated in the same way. The pressure might not be as high as mentioned and thus not be as big a problem.

Bear in mind that Europa's gravity is 1/7th of Earth's so it takes 7 metres depth of Europa's ocean to equal to pressure of 1 metre of Earth's ocean. With that in mind, the depths of Europa's ocean range from 60km all the way to 160km. This corresponds to pressure of 860 to 2280 bars – nowhere near 10000 bars. In comparison, Challenger Deep has a pressure of 1100 bars.

It's fascinating and also terrifying to know that there's an ocean 160km deep!! Have you ever zoomed on a faraway place using a telescope?? Zoom to a place 160km or even just 100km away. That's how far deep it is.

Pressure shouldn't be a problem since Europa is roughly the size of Earth's moon (which has 1/6 Earth's gravity). If you stacked 1000 pound of weight on someone on earth, the pressure would likely kill you. On the moon you'd be fine since that would only be about 165 lbs.

You missed an important part. I can't even imagine a communication system that would be able to deliver a signal from there. (radio, programming, and engineering guy here)

Submarine frequencies are around 3-300 Hz, and those can only hit through like 20 meters of water. Anything of higher frequency can't do that. As a solution for deep water communication there are long cables with an antenna floating on the water. Due to signal loss in cables, for example, for every 100 m of usual Ethernet cable there should be a retranslator with amplifier. So, we need about 1000 retranslators, 1000 cables 100m long, need everything to be connected before startup from the earth. We need these retranslators calibrated to the temperature they're going to be hanging at (because every of those will be on different altitude point). We need to make sure that long cable doesn't break due to its weight.

I don't believe in hydrophones or anything of the kind - because you need them to stay directly in one place to make the pipeline. Stabilization could be hard, we don't know anything about the flow there. Deployment of such a system would require an operator for sure - and the latency of communication would be about 4 hours per data pack due to lightspeed (radiowave travels with the same speed).

No, this is not possible without a very big technological breakthrough - like quantum communication or something of the sort.

What if you have some solar panels attached to a lander on the surface and a wire connected to the drill/sub as it swims around the ocean. Although, you'd have to use probably all of the wire cabling in the world to do it. Unless the sub comes up to the surface every now and then to absorb solar power before going back down again.

Perhaps there could be "mountains" underwater under Europa where the sea floor would be much more shallow. The pressure would be much less, so submarines could study them. Or the submarines could just inspect the water at the top of the ocean where the pressure would also be less.

I want to stick a hydrophone on all the oceans on all the moons. Finding some advanced marine life using sonic communications would be awesome. Also, I think the pressure, heat, and gravity differences would improve our ability to drill deeper with traditional drill rigs. The Earth's a rock&metal bitch. If the crust was just made of water ice, it'd be much easer to go deeper. At somepoint you're going to go so deep that you're going to drop your drill (b/c the rig can't hold the weight) or it will get so ho t& dense the drill will just fuse with the environment, or warp beyond repair. But, a cryobot is an interesting way to go.

I think the design would need to drop a insulated optical tether cable above it for communications b/c I don't think it will ever be able to return to the surface, and that com-cable will likely need to be strong/stretchy if possible because I think that the glacier crust could snap the cable under tidal and convective forces. But it could be designed in such a way to grant the actual probe the ability to separate from the link and communicate wirelessly up to a certain range, and return to the link to recharge if its designed to get its power from the surface, but that will probably be unlikely.

If there is anything extremely interesting down there, perhaps a complex ecosystem later missions could melt and construct a durable elevator shaft that would resist breaking up under the forces acting on it. In which all kinds of equipment could be deployed and retrieved. If Enceladus and Europa are lifeless right now that would be an incredible shock to me. As their glacier-crusts should have formed a sufficient barrier from all the radiation their respective surfaces are exposed to, and yet impacts carrying all the essential ingredients for life from comets and asteroids during their formation should be abundantly deposited into the interior oceans to be perpetually disturbed by the tidal forces acting upon them. They should have dynamic and stratified interior with multiple environments suitable for many kinds of life but niche enough to force speciation to occur. If that's not the case a chemistry analysis of the ocean water would probably quickly determine what has gone wrong because we keep finding life on earth even when we are going way out of our way to try and find a patch that isn't suitable for life in extreme conditions far beyond what we can naturally survive.

(It could be that late-history impacts were sufficient to cause the crusts to completely melt, and for radiation to pour into the interior sterilizing those worlds multiple times & any impact sufficient enough to cause a global thaw would have never left a record of itself visible from space. But the earth's ecosystems are the offspring of many species that survived global extinctions, some of them many times over so life is practically just another a force of nature.)

100 km of water on Europa should exert less than twice the pressure of the mariana trench, as the gravity on Europa is lower (the pressure is still insane though)

Have to use a sealed mini-nuke with a retractable dome. Vent reactor heat ahead of the sub, shoot drainage out the back end to plug the hole. That way, when the sub breaks through, the pressure won't destroy subbie in a nano-second!!! Just a thought...

Hi, nice video. A few questions: why compare drilling into the earth’s crust with drilling into the earth? Rock that gets hotter and hotter (hundreds/thousands of degrees celcius eventually) isn’t exactly the same as ice that gradually reaches its melting point of 0 degrees celcius. Also the video appears to be making the assumption that since the pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench is ~1000 bars it must be 10x times as much on Europa’s seafloor because it’s 10 times deeper. Is it me or are the differences in gravity not being overlooked here? What am I overlooking here?

Wouldn't we still be able to drill through the layer of ice? The reason that we have only drilled 12km is because the crust becomes hotter and hotter and it became to got for the drill. But since we're drilling through ice it would be easier.

Quite disappointing how hard it would be to drill under europa's surface. I had not realised it was 25km thick.
Good video and my optimism was right, you have grown massively. When I first subscribed you had 1600 subscribers.
Now, you have 14,695!
As I said in the previous video, I was very impressed by the fact that you acted on my advice and made a video about cosmic distances.
You could easily have 25,000 subs by 2018 and 150,000 by 2019. Possibly even 500,000 by 2020 but I am being sceptical.
When I joined this channel, I said you would get 10,000 subscribers by 2018, I had underestimated your content and suddenly, you have 10,000 subscribers.

yes, but thats not the same thickness all around the moon. In fact the geysers we have now concluded exist with observational proof, indicate that the thickness of the crust varies and their could be areas where the crust is 4-6 km deep.. Also, when you have a radioactive tipped bullet\probe slowly melting its way down thru the ice cap,, it doesnt really matter how deep it is, its'll just take longer, but the results and energy expended to get there are pretty much the same no matter how thick.

Darren Rushworth-Moore well actually the drone would have to be autonomous, and not radio controlled for the exploration part.. they are already testing the sub in the lakes in Canada, and maybe Lake Vostok already in Antarctica, where the AI of the sub, is smart enough to conduct exploration on its own, and then radios the data back to the scientists, who then make adjustments to the software programming for the next bit of exploration, and so on and so forth..

actually, it is theorized that the thickness of europa's ice cap is not uniform, and that whilst there might be areas that are 25km+ thick, there are also areas that are open to the crust.

Could we send an artificial meteorite to hit Europa before the probe lands in the crater that the collision will create? Would it be easy to create a meteorite that would create a 20km crater? I have read that the size of the crater is much bigger than the size of the object.

Another problem is that at such extreme depths and pressure, water will turn into an exotic form of ice, called Ice VII. Ice VII is compressed water, different to the ice here on earth, which is frozen water. So reaching Europa's "floor" may altogether be impossible even if we hae the technology to drill through the 30km ice surface

Any probe to melt down that far would surely have nuclear power, so it could last a while.

Nuclear power is actually a lot simpler if you have something to dump heat into. It is the need for radiators that make nuclear power in space not hugely more convenient than solar power, even a fair distance from the sun.

We will likely send several missions to the geysers to sniff what's coming up, and possibly use them to gain access to the depths since the drilling and the coming up with an autonomous sub seem pretty distant goals.

Any pockets of air in a Europa submarine would have to be replaced with some sort of inert liquid substance and that would include camera equipment. Every diver knows every 33 feet of depth in water is equal to one Earth atmosphere; approximately 14.5 P.S.I.,. Perhaps a substance like mineral oil could be used but nevertheless the pressures would be so unbelievably high that I can't believe any vessel could survive such pressures at the kind of depths we're speaking of here unless we can somehow equalise the pressures between the inside and outside of this proposed submersible vessel. It would be exciting though if we could do this.

I don't think that the drilling part of this mission would be as hard as you put it. The main issue when drilling deep here on Earth is the enormous heat generated but on Europa we are drilling into ice which must be colder than 0°C since the melting temperature of ice decreases with increasing pressure. This means that the surrounding ice will actually be an efficient cooling agent and is easily capable of absobing enough of the heat generated by the friction that this should not be a big problem anymore if we drill slowly enough (also, this heat will also melt the ice, driving the drill further down). Also, ice is not nearly as strong as most rocks, making the drilling even easier and reducing the abrasive damage to the drill.

We think what we're seeing is volcanic eruptions from satellite pics but it could be gases escaping from the tremendous pressure at the bottom of Europa ocean,remember at the bottom of an ocean 62 miles deep will act as a solid "ice 7" so maybe there's trapped gases that escape from friction caused by Jupiter's gravity😳

Just like to point out that the newer Martian Rovers don't actually use solar panels. Perseverance and Curiosity used the natural decay of unstable/radioactive elements to create electricity, and the same would probably be done with this submersible.

The video gives the impression that the pressure would be several times as high as the deepest part of the Earth's ocean. But Europa's surface gravity is only 13% of the Earth's. Thus, the pressure at a depth of 100 miles in Europa's ocean is the same as the pressure at the depth of 13 miles in Earth's ocean. That's only twice as deep as the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of Earth's ocean. Since there has already been a manned mission to the bottom of the Marianas trench, it not at all far-fetched to believe that a robot which could withstand twice that pressure could be designed.

If there were things that were complex on Europa, a good way to detect them would probably by using a sensitive microphone. Complex life there would probably use echolocation is my guess.

That is not right, that at the bottom of europas ocean is 1000 times more pressure than on earth. Europa has waaay smaller gravity and due to hydrostatic law the pressure there won't be so big ;)

no, its exactly the same as it is at the deepest trecnch in earth's ocean, due to the tiny mass of the moon, compared to the mass of earth.. So 100kms down on europa is roughly equal to 6km's down\pressure wise\ on earth.

The problem with pressure is if you try to contain a gas filled compartment in the sub. If you fill it up with liquid, the pressure would pose no problem. Also, I don't understand why they wouldn't use nuclear power for the sub to make it last a long time.

Obviously, even with just the technology that we have now, we can put a satellite in orbit around Europa, & with the necessary scientific instruments, capture the materials spewed forth by the plumes, some 160 km above the surface, and determine the contents of those liquids & ices, in terms of life, chemical content, etc.

We don't need to send a rover to the surface of Europa, let alone a submersible underneath the ice, to determine if there is life in/on Europa, & that's a good thing. Supposedly, we have not, at least yet, figured out how to completely sanitize any object, such as that which we send into space, of all microbial life. If we were to send an object to Europa, a rover and/or submersible, that does have microbial life on its surface we could, very literally, contaminate life on Europa, putting, in theory, all life on Europa in dire jeopardy.

We have such fears of aliens doing that to us, right here on planet Earth; how ironic would it be if we were to do that to the first object in our whole universe where we find life, beyond our own planet?!

Unfortunately, the host of this video brought up none of this!

You made a mistake regarding the pressure, the lack of gravity means liquid pressure does not exist. Because there is no force pushing the water downwards.

Drilling tens of km through ice by melting is doable. however, we need a few mini nuclear reactors to provide enough energy to melt all of that and some sophisticated drill with drone like precision and ai-like intelligence to navigate in different direction through any cracks or solids that it comes in contact with, it wont be easy. you would need design a very sophisticated robot, but it would be very easy to test and train (in the arctic ice here on earth) but with modern technology and enough inspiration & money it's very doable.
