Sale crapaud
Ina-ich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The French song "Sale crapaud" by Ina-Ich is a story about an ugly toad who resides in a murky pond filled with muck and grime, dreaming of flying up high above like the beautiful birds. He watches the pretty birds above and wishes he could fly like them. However, there is also a white dove in the same sky above who is bored and enjoys using her ability to drop her excrement onto the toad as a way to pass the time. The toad is deeply hurt as he is constantly covered in the dove's feces, causing him to become embarrassed, defeated, and sorrowful.

As the song progresses, the toad decides to stand up for himself and attempts to attack the white dove with his own weapon, his saliva. Unfortunately, despite his effervescent efforts, he is unable to reach the lofty heights of the bird. In the end, the toad is left alone and sad in his dirty water, daydreaming about the possibility of becoming a bird.

The song serves as a critique of social inequalities and the idea of self-acceptance. No matter how much the toad wished to be like the birds, he could not escape his reality and was constantly reminded of his inferiority. It also highlights the cruelty of those who take pleasure in belittling others, with the dove using her “gift” to feel powerful while constantly causing the toad pain.
